So after flying through the MOT last week my car has reached 150,000 miles :woohoo:almost 3 yrs to the date of purchase @ 64K. Only been serviced as per CBS and run on supermarket derv the only addition was an auto box service @ 100K. Still returns 40mpg which I think is excellent considering the size of the car (the way its driven :D) and its an xdrive. DPF lifespan shows 50K remaining but this is just a generic number with ash content @ 39.4grams the DPF alone should be good for another 150K. Now starting to use a litre of 5/30 between services but that's due to engine wear as the exhaust tips are shinny. May look to change the grade to 5/40 for further servcies but obviously LL04. Nothing around to beat it and who want's an electric car after the recent report from the RAC stating that rapid charging now costs the same as a petrol car per mile

Just goes to show what a difference correct servicing intervals makes.

Makes me think of the miles I changed cars at when working
Prior to 525d used Range Rovers but got fed up with them in garage more than on road.
525d bought Oct 2001 left me Sept 2003 115k miles our fitter bought it and ran to over 250,000 miles
330d delivered Sept 2003 handed back to lease Sept 2005. 132k miles ( most reliable car ever , only had one belt outside of normal service items)
335d bought Oct 2005 ran intermittently until I retired about 80,000 miles
Retired in 2007 bought a 4 year old 525i Tourer with 41k miles on sold April 2014 with 191k miles (during this time OH had Nissan ,I had another RR)
    Since 2014 ran the X1 e84 (18d)then the X1 f48 (20i)and of course the Z3
Cars serviced by main dealers except the Z3 ( son bought it in 2010 now in my name) that gets all oils changed each year , and other items os required, does 2,500 miles most years.

    Great result
    Served you well
I am a big believer of the high mileage these cars achieve without too much trouble… having witnessed it from fella colleagues at work
    3.0d….. both 5 series at around 280k
My old fella used to buy Toyotas like we buy carrots at the supermarket…. Every time 36k came round he got rid of them cus the warranty was up….
But he was quite happy to see me in some derv burning contraption going to work daily at 100 miles a day with 150k plus on the clock….. weirdo…

Some high miles there. IMHO I believe cars deteriorate more with age than mileage assuming service intervals are adhered to. Plastics deteriorate with exposure to atmosphere and heat cycles. Electronics are similarly affected as is bodywork and metal parts. Engines deteriorate if lubricants aren’t regularly refreshed. If a car is not used for extended periods the lubricants deteriorate just sitting still.

If a car does 5k/year it’s unlikely to last 30 years to get to 150k miles. However just about any car sold today will easily hit 150k in 3 years @ 50k/year and go on to do higher miles.

My Father in Law has a 2009 X535d m sport. It has 80k on the clock and he does about 1500 miles/year. It’s constantly at the mechanics due to deteriorating parts mostly plastics. He has owned it for about 4 years now and spends about £800/yr on parts and maintenance. If he did 10000/yr it would still cost him the same.

Even better if doing lots of long runs. I bought a Ford Orion (pic below) at over 40k miles and 18 months old. Just like new. Rear seats had never been used. Was a company car driving from Newbury to Wootton Bassett each day, mostly on the M4.

Bimmers are designed to run for 300,000 km and 10 years, with servicing to schedule, and no major replacements. What generally kills cars off these days is ECU’s failing. They are difficult to fix and even harder to find replacements.

At nearly 20 years old and with 143k+ up, mine gives lie to that. Just MOT'd with no advisories. :thumright: :driving:

I don’t think I said it would crumble on 10 years plus 1 day. This is the design standard. There are thousands of classics running well 59+ years beyond their design standards.
