So, hot on the heels of @bmwzoom and his winter tyre thread, I will need/want to be choosing some winter rubber for the Zed before the prices/demand go up later in the year.

I've sourced some brand new 17" genuine BMW alloys and just need to decide upon the tyres.

RealOEM suggests the following, all RFT:

    - Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip
    - Pirelli W210 Sottorzero
    - Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25
    - Continental WinterContact TS810 SSR
    - Dunlop SP WinterSport 3D

Having had the ContiWinterSport on the 1er last winter, I am considering going with the Contis again. But we're having quite good experiences with Pirelli Cintuaro on the X3 so I'm wondering whether to give the Pirelli's a go given also they've got a "B" rating for wet weather performance over the "E" for the Contis.

    Any experiences or advice?

I've had good experiences with the Goodyear and the Dunlops, marginal preference for the latter as they are very quiet and last well for about the same amount of grip but I have no info to compare with the other brands.
One thing to be aware of, the tyre performance ratings appear to differ depending upon tyre size - a C for wet grip in one size and an E in others is not uncommon.
See for example: http://www.blackcircles.com/tyres/brands/pirelli/winter-240-sottozero-serie-ii-Winter-tyre and http://www.blackcircles.com/tyres/brands/dunlop/winter-sport-3d Scroll down to the all tyres sizes part.

Had Vredestein (don't remember the exact model but I think it had "extreme" in it) on the B10 and it went very well in poor conditions that had 4X4s slithering and getting stuck.

I've got Conti Winter Contacts on the X5. Not been through any really nasty stuff but they also seem to go very well when it's around zero or below. They just feel like ordinary tyres. The Vredesteins always felt a bit squidgy in both hot and cold conditions. But not dangerous. The Contis seem to feel the same as summer tyres all the time. I might run them all year around (or at least try it for one season) where they not on such small (for X5) wheels.

I wonder if these all season tyres are any good? They seem to be getting more popular. Or is it just marketing over physics?

Another vote for the Vredestein Wintrac Extremes, I'm not sure if they come in RFT versions though. This winter will be the 4th time I've had them on the car, they wear very well.

    Good stuff - thanks chaps.

I'll take a look. After thinking back to the experiences with the Contis on the 1er and performing very much the same whether winter or very warm "summer" conditions, I'm erring towards those. But that comes at a price. Let's see what the price differential is.

Same here, Wintrac Extreme are excellent tires. As mentioned elsewhere, we run them year round. 15k miles a year and no issues with wear.
