l have been looking for a second car for a while and was not sure what to get. there was some very cheap Mondeos about and as l was familiar with the Mondeo they were on the radar. l also looked at two ford focus. whilst l was thinking about what l was driving in the late 90s and early 2000s l got around to thinking what l wanted to be driving in that era but couldn't justify/afford it and the BMW E46 coupe was the car that came to mind

so all searches for fords were deleted and l started looking at E46 3 series coupes and there is some interesting stuff out there. l know that the E46 M3 is the holy grail but to expensive and not really what i wanted and as the 330ci and the club sport coupes are being snapped up by the people that want an M3 but cant afford one so they are buying up the 330ci and the club sport coupes and prices for them are strong and some are silly money there are couple of minters about and one with less than ten thousand miles from new up for sale for twenty one grand

l already have a six cylinder petrol that wll bring a smile to your face every time you press the start button so l don't really need another one?
so l started looking at the four cylinder E46 coupes

l am looking at a very nice example of the 318ci coupe it is a lowly spec with a cloth interior but it is very low mileage and it is in very nice condition for a car that is just over 20 years old. and the cloth interior does not seem to suffer the same fate of the leather with badly worn and spilt seat bolsters and baggy seat bases

the car is nothing to exiting but it is a pre LCI E46 coupe which l think is a stunning looking car and is one BMW that has stood the test of time

    Sounds good.

I had 2 x E46s and although the second one had some issues, both of them felt like they truly would last a very long distance. Also very comfortable places to sit. I found them more GT cars than sporty per se, but very enjoyable to spend time in.

I went for the 330Ci's and although I see your rationale for going for a 318 or 320, the 6 cylinder is so much more melodious than even anything in the current ranges given the WTLP stipulations on emissions etc.

You've most likely uncovered things in your research but be aware of rusting arches, wheel alignment, leaking alloys, tyres (need to be matching on rubber which suits the chassis, especially if M Sport), the non HK speakers are woeful. And I think pixel issues which are common to E39s of the same era.

GLWTSearch - do keep us posted. I'm more of a fan of the post-facelift E46s, but whether pre or post, they are for me one of the most beautiful BMWs made......looking good even to this day.

Just an update on the excellent CarPlan No.1 Super Gloss recommended by @Singvogel.

My 330d was treated to its second application of No.1 SG in November. The paintwork is still very clean and shiny, even though I've driven a few motorway trips in wet weather. The treatment seems to repel the dirt well and appears to last more than 6 months. The beading in the rain is excellent. Considering that it can be applied in around 15 minutes, it is so much easier than conventional polish and wax. So this was definitely a Top Tip from @Singvogel - thanks Bob. (y)

Bought some of this at B&M this morning, only £8.50 so I'll be giving it a go at the weekend if the weather's okay. Sound like it's good stuff so I'm very optimistic....(y)

Just finished cleaning the wife's E92, and giving it an application of the CarPlan No1 SG. I thought it best to give the paintwork a going over with a clay mitt first, and even then it looked good. Anyway, can't see it being long before it gets dirty, then when I wash it I'll find out if I applied it correctly!!

    Beer time now...

Thanks for tipping us off to this stuff @Singvogel
Have used it now on both my chariots and very pleased with the results. 3 months in, still seeing lots of beading. It gets better though...

For the first time in ages, I was back in the office in Blackpool yesterday, having driven there in the MX-5. The local seagulls are huge and hugely incontinent and c**p their bodyweight or more each day of guano which sticks to paint slightly better than superglue.

Sure enough, I got back to the car for the journey home to find every panel apart from the rear bumper covered in seagull s**t.

Drove home, needed to remove it. Normally Meguiars Quik Detailer and a microfibre doesn't even start to shift it, I usually have to use hot water. However, with this coating on, a quick wipe with the detailing spray worked a treat. Happy days...
