I’ve noticed what look like cracks in my windscreen. On the photo you can see tow separate marks, the smaller one was noticed a month or so ago, the larger one has appeared in the last two weeks. At first I thought it was a separation/tear in the black backing on the glass, but now I can feel a slight edge on the larger one. Only a very slight edge when running my finger nail across the crack. There are no chips or other damage on the screen, and as these are at the bottom middle of the screen it does seem an odd place for stone related damage. Could the screen have flexed maybe? Considering a trip to a dealer to take a closer look as a warranty job. Anyone seen anything like this?
Are these inside or out? If inside they can’t be vandalism. I mention vandalism, because that’s what it looks like. I’ve had a few screens crack, but never in such a zigzag manner; the crack has always originated from a “stone” chip, and then over a period of time expanded in a nice slightly curved line. As to flex, well they have to, the whole body flexes. Are they in line of sight (as defined for MOT purposes), because if so you could make a legitimate claim under your insurance.
They are not in the line of sight, photos don’t show it too well but they are just above the wipers and within the black screen surround. Look to be on the inside of the glass, hence only just being able to feel the crack with a thumb/finger nail.
That’s what I am thinking. Definitely needs looking at. 10 months old and 8k miles in, can only get worse so needs sorting out before it extends. Oh goody, a warranty trip….
Would a stress crack but covered under new car warranty Is it a "manufacturing fault" or "failure" which is what the warranty covers OR is it due to ouside influences ?
I've only seen horizontal cracks like that on rally cars. Mk1 Escorts were prone to suffer when coming down hard after having 'wheels off the ground' on hump-back bridges etc. Some Warranty Managers can take a lot of convincing, so be prepared for severe questioning about rough roads, potholes, and speed bumps. Good luck with claiming it from BMW. Otherwise it'll be an insurance claim with a £75 to £100 excess.
Hoping to get some time on Friday to go over to Sytners and see what the say. Agree that it will be a battle, and in all probability I’m not going to get much joy.
there is a section on the A458 from shrewsbury as you approach middletown. that we knew locally as the seven sisters, years ago there were seven yumps and it was possible to get airborne on the last two as you approach welshpool they have been sanitised a lot over the years by road improvements but there are still five yumps and you can still get air on two of them
I remember that section well, mainly because of the Honda Jazz doing 45mph along that whole section, and the solid white lines running the entire length. There was no air to be had on that day.
Stopped off at Tamworth Sytners this morning, was seen straight away. The chap agreed that it looks to be stress fractures, they have seen them on the odd occasion in the G2x platform. Booked in for the 9th October to leave with them, they will take photos and do a warranty report. If they get the go ahead, new screen the following day. So far an efficient service. We shall see what warranty say….
Sounds good so far, just make sure that they know it has HUD fitted and order the correct screen. When a work colleague had the screen on his old X5 replaced at a main dealer they managed to fit a plain one..
last windscreen I had on a non-bmw fitted was done via insurance, think it was free or a very minimal payment of say £25 or similar. I think auto glass did it. Was all done with no issues, I was a little concerned if replacement would fit as well as original but all was fine. I sold the car a few months later. Kev
We’re on 2 new screens on the X5 All auto glass….. despite many complaints from sytners about being non BMW everything works perfectly…. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I was very happy with Autoglass when I had a screen fitted on my F30. Genuine BMW parts, complete with all sensors and clips etc. Fitted on my drive by a very careful professional guy who really took a pride in his work.
Sytners will do a report that goes off to BMW for a decision. Dealership will be held responsible for any warranty work they do without prior authorisation Some dealership warranty managers might take the risk if other similar warranty claims have been paid out. If BMW warranty decline ask for "goodwill" from BMW as it appears its not a one off problem
I’m having the NS front alloy re-cut today, they had an offer on and have been meaning to get it sorted since I scuffed it months and months ago.
