After successfully changing the front discs and pads on my 640d I decided to tackle the rear. Brembo discs, pads and sensor bought from Autodoc and tried to fit this last weekend. Unfortunately the electronic hand brake mechanism proved to be a struggle. There is a manual retraction process shown on various YouTube videos. Sadly most of these cars seem to have lived in warm dry California where the Torx head bolts were easily removed. Despite my car having only covered 40K miles in 6 years the torx screws are not for budging so I cannot get the calliper retracted for the new pads. Apart from admitting defeat and taking the car and parts to a dealer to fit it appears that I can put the electronic braking brake into service mode using a reader like the Ancel BM500. Has anyone used this device or similar for rear electronic parking brake and how easy was it to do? The reader can be had for about £50 so tempting but don’t want to potentially waste more money if it doesn’t work. Any advise appreciated.

I haven’t done it with that reader only with ISTA but if the reader can do it then no reason why it won’t.

Thank you for the reply, I have ordered the reader as it appears it will set the handbrake to service mode amongst other things. A quick question when you did it via ISTA after fitting new pads did you have to then take it out of service mode or did the electronic handbrake adjust back to position once you reapplied it? Hopefully it is clearer once I have the reader but that seemed to be a bit of a grey area when I looked on the web.

When I used ISTA I completed service mode and it sorts out the adjustment
