Am I correct in observing you are running the E90 tyres size on the F30? Wearing them out before up-sizing? I see another user choosing easy clean winter rims.;) As to the clearance, I'm surprised I can fit a 17" rim on the 535i with it's even larger disc than your F30 brakes (330mm vs. 348mm). I've about 5mm clearance with BMW shaping the extremes of the calliper brake carrier. Snug fit no doubt about it. Peter
Spot on there, Peter - and about having easy-clean wheels, although they do have a channel behind the spokes that tends to hold water. The tyres have a few mm to go before I swap them out for the F30 50 profile size. I'll likely sell them on when they reach 4mm.
My winters have been on the 1er since October and if I'm honest, I'd struggle to tell the difference over the summer set aside from the odd flash of the DSC light if I've overcooked it a bit on the exit to a corner and that's in temps of 16degs C. At this moment in time, although they're not getting the temps they were designed for, they are proving stellar companions and I'm even more convinced than I was in October, that I could well just run these throughout the whole year. I've got nothing but good things to say about the Conti WinterContact tyres. As a reminder, I'm running them on 16" steelies (w/o hubcaps). The 1er will be with us until May 2017 - at that time we'll make our decision as to what we will do and given that's "only" 17months away, I'm thinking I'll keep the winters on and if the day comes to px, then I'll pop on a mint set of summer alloys and tyres (all with 7mm tread on) and won't have to worry about having money knocked off for tyres or scuffed alloys. The winters are dirt cheap too and, current thinking suggests that if/when we change the 1er, it will either be an i3 RE or another 1er (factory build) - so the winters could end up being retained for that. We'll see. In the meantime, no detriment to performance and safe in the knowledge if winter does bite, we're on the best rubber. If summer turns out to be a hot one and the tyres degrade, then I'll swap, but so far no complaints whatsoever.
Having driven about 700 miles in my winters (Cornwall and back), I am left disappointed for a few reasons. - The tyres, Dunlop Wintersport 5, seem to be a lot noisier than the Conti 5's that were on before. I haven't driven those roads with the Contis though so might be unfair, although I am sure on the M25 they were also noisier. - I think the Monkeys that fitted them did not do a good job at balancing them, either that or they put the weights in the wrong place and the brake calliper has knocked some off (only a few mm between calliper and wheel). - Took the car in elsewhere for 4 wheel alignment. Not sure if they did a proper job or not. £25 seems a bit cheap. Will take the car to get the wheels re-balanced tomorrow and see if that makes a difference, otherwise will get the alignment looked at again and then the suspension.,
-17 with wind chill today. the Goodrides are providing the good ride written on the sidewall. Please await picture of accord in ditch (for second time in a month) shortly.
Deepest darkest Polska eh. Masovian Voivodeship perhaps? Get yourself a bottle of Wyborowa and some nice Kielbasa and forget about the weather.
For the attention of Spuff and other winter tyre aficionados. Having run the cheapest winter tyres i could find on mytyres - Goodride SW601 for the last 2 months/5000KM in average temperatures of below zero, down to -20 for a couple of weeks and on slush, fast highway and icy conditions I can safely say I wouldn't bother buying a mid or premium brand on anything less than 200BHP. I have experience with budget winters before and I am just as impressed, but in life I am generally easily pleased. For those who baulk at the price of the big name brands and take a pass on winter tyres on cost reasons I understand, but for the sake of balance I would say that they are worth it considering I paid approx £140 for 4 16 inch tyres. I certainly wouldn't run them all year round like some do because they probably turn into blocks of cheese over 15C, in genuine winter conditions they represent a good deal.
Sorry Singvogel, just saw your post, wasn't ignoring you honest. Yes on border of Mazowieckie and Lubelskie here. You must have a camera installed on me because I am enjoying a local beer and kielbasa as we speak.
Good to know. And good to point out too as I know of plenty of my German colleagues who run "cheap" winter tyres and they also tell me how effective they are and how little difference they see between the bigger brands. That said, ADAC tests are the ones I look to for the empirical data on how they run and make my choices from the top 5.
£880 +vat. for Pirelli, as I am limited to who makes makes both sizes to fit my car, and even then had to drop from 295 to 285 on the back. Good info though and feedback
Thought I would post a pic before I take them off, hated the look at first but they don't look too bad once they're cover in dirt. I'm going to keep them on a few weeks as I'm sticking the MV4 on eBay to fund the new wheels (OEMS IFG3).
Just ordered a new pair of the Vredestein Wintrack Extreme S.. look to be a more performance oriented version of the old ones.. hopefully get them fitted in the next few days. Anyone tried them?
I have got them on at the moment but they will be coming off soon, temps have been above single figures for the last couple of weeks and to be honest at these temps and they're really bad.
I'm seriously thinking about taking mine off, I honestly can't see it turning suddenly Arctic here in leafy Berks.
Where did you order from if I may ask ? I tried to get one a week ago (lost one to a pothole) and couldn't get one anywhere, had to get a Continental Winter Contact instead.
Remember to have a look on Tyre Leader next time, can't be beaten for price. I will be ordered my new summer tyres from there as well.
The range of temperatures on this little island never ceases to amaze me. For sure you guys 'doon Sooth' can change soon, but not so up here in the tundra-like wastes of Aberdeenshire. We have Met Office yellow warnings of snow and ice just about every other day - cue the jokes about not eating yellow snow. ;) Peak daytime temperatures are still around 5C, and around freezing most nights - we have snow forecast for Tuesday night/Wednesday morning for example. I'm just hoping that I can get my Summer wheels & tyres on for our European trip just after Easter. A couple of years ago we set off in snow at -4C and landed up 3 days later on a Croatian autoput in +32C - but the winters took it in their stride albeit that I didn't press on as hard as normal. I was polishing my Summer 18" staggered wheels only yesterday, but the square set up of 17" with winters will stay on for a good while yet. Roll on Springtime.
Here in Cheshire, the only snow we've had was a Saturday night when it was white over. I was really looking forward to trying the 330d Xdrive on the white stuff only to find a green sunny landscape next morning. And as for spring, it's already here. I cut my lawn last week because the grass had grown so much. I know, before you say it - there's time yet.
Similar over here. We've had the high temperature peaks, but soon back to the 2 - 5C range. Temperature warning 'bong' often sounding in my car. Today looks as if it is going to be a still "sunny" day, frost has come in with the sunrise, so still a cold day ahead.
Got them on TyreLeader as HP88 mentioned. I usually use Reifen.com but Tyreleader were marginally cheaper and could ship them to a local garage.
