Hi, Has anyone ran them both side by side? As I am interested to no which is best before I take up the black friday deal. I have apple carplay for google / apple / waze maps etc but these don't operate on my HUD like the bmw nav. Some reviews I had seen say that the RTTI lags behind all of the above? Espically as the fitted sim card is only 3G. Decisions decisions Thanks Rgds Peter
Interesting question. Now I’ve got CarPlay (no sir, that won’t work on your F32 as you don’t have the WiFi option, erm, yes I do…), and have also been using RTTI I’ve been doing a few comparisons. The only slight flaw in this side by side is the fact that if I’m running the nav in the car, and then change to Google maps, the car recognises another nav is being used and stops the directions/traffic etc. However, I use both as I find it useful to compare and contrast. There have been occasions when Google has said that there is traffic Armageddon and the journey will take Y time, then switch to the car and it says X time, and quicker. Sometimes the car nav is quicker to update, sometimes Google. In fairness I think they are pretty much as accurate as each other, at slightly different times. I’ve updated the RTTI and map updates with the new Connected Drive package. I’ve also got city parking live updates now, will definitely be trying that the next time I drive my car to Birmingham, Manchester or London.
Cheers Wynne, The question was kinda directed towards you as I knew like me you had carplay. I’m guessing for the £48 it’s worth a punt as I do like the directions on the hud. Can’t remember if you have hud or not ? Thanks for the info Rgds Peter
No hud on my car. Didn’t really see many optioned with this when I was buying mine. I do use the dash (between the speedo and rev counter) arrows/street names etc with the car nav, these don’t show using Google.
I've no idea about the Google system, but RTTI has saved me several times from being stuck in traffic tailbacks. Just last Friday afternoon, we drove up to Standish Lancs to collect our two grand children. Standish was gridlocked with rush hour traffic off the M6 motorway, and RTTI suggested a diversion on country lanes from J27 and then onto residential back roads, eventually emerging about 200 yds from our destination. We never hit one traffic queue and it saved 16 minutes, if we had gone through the town centre. So I can only give RTTI the 'Thumbs Up'.
Hardly ever used Apple maps, and have never used Waze. I’d imagine all these app versions of navigation use a very similar data base and approach.
I use Waze on my phone in parallel with RTTI in the car, largely in NW England but also on the occasional trip to Dorset. In my experience, RTTI and Waze are pretty equal when it comes to motorways and trunk roads but Waze is better in urban traffic and city centres.
Similar approach on collecting movement data from BMWs using RTTI however I would expect the might of Google (who owns Waze) to have a lot more data (especially as they can harvest data from any make of vehicle and Android phones) , the user report feature in Waze plus Googles ability to process 'big data' to win the day.
I have found RTTI very good on the built in navigation. Just waiting until tomorrow to renew mine on Cyber deals as current subscription ends tonight. I was going to upgrade to Apple car play so I could use Waze but I have driven several cars recently with it built in and I was distinctly underwhelmed by the Car play interface (on two VW's and a new M235i and M340i) That coupled with car play not being HUD compatible for navigation even in the new BMW's means I will be sticking to BMW's navigation. (Just wish it showed speed cameras like Waze does rather well..)
Don't have the luxury of idrive in my cars so i stick to fashioned navigation aid TomTom. I have one of the latest ones with a sim in it and it is cleaver. Even going through the average cameras it tells you your actual average at any point in-between the 2 cameras. Plus the live traffic and reroute and all sorts. Suites me as i am old lol.
TBH Tom Tom is of the best guidance systems, much better than in my opinion than the manufacturers built in systems - they have struggled to sell units in the face of smartphone apps and integration, but they are still great..
Back in 2011 a Tom Tom Plus took us all the way to Sorrento and back without a hitch. That was a great bit of kit back then. 3.5K miles with just one traffic jam, stuck in Switzerland waiting for the tunnels to re-open. We had stupidly decided to travel through there on a public holiday, traffic carnage!
I use Apple maps as a back up. Seems to be more reactive in real time situations. Have you seen the video of someone putting a load of mobiles in a trolley basket etc and then slowly walking down a street to trick it in to thinking there is a traffic situation. I’ll see if I can find the video. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
