    Hi All,
I'm in the market for a new car and am considering being a BMW 1st time owner, always been a Merc guy (didn't mean to swear)

So the only 2 models I like are 4 series or 6 series, this is purely because of the exterior looks.
My budget is £20,000 and really would be grateful for any help and advice on which model to go for.
A little information about me and what the car will be used for.
66 mile round trip Mon to Fri, of which 56 miles are motorway miles.
Will not be carrying passengers in the rear of the car.
Have a 2nd car which is an estate, which helps when buying bulky items.
I'm in my very late 40's.

All information received will be much appreciated.

    Regards
    Sunny

    Hello and welcome.

Sounds like a good choice of two excellent cars. Journey wise you will be absolutely fine with a diesel, no worries on the regen etc with those daily miles.
For me I’d go with the 435d (but I am biased as I have a 2017 440i....) over the 6 series. I’m also late 40s ( as in very, very late) and although I loved the 640d my friend has, it just didn’t sit quite right with my particular wants/needs/style. Maybe as the next car.
I absolutely love the F32 I have. Handles really well, has great external looks and a very smart interior.
The 435d is an absolute rocket ship, acceleration etc not far off the M4, but with decent economy.
Just my thoughts. Have fun in the research and search.

The 4 series likely to be more sporty to drive and clearly is smaller than the 6 series so easier to travel quickly on any country lanes.

The 6 series will be more refined (quieter all round) and therefore likely to be the better motorway cruiser. You can get Comfort seats in a 6 series but not in a 4 if the ultimate seats are on your list of must haves. 6 series have a better std spec than a 4 so even the base cars are well equipped.

I have a soft spot for the 640d having been lent one in 2011 to take part in a charity event. It had the all important adaptive drive active anti-roll bars which helped sharpen the handling.

I think the 6 series interior is a bit nicer than the 4, but the car is physically bigger which makes parking more of a chore.

With regard the 435d, I would suggest checking out the ride height and suspension, because the 335d for some reason wasn’t fitted with Msport suspension and had a higher ride height, which meant the handling wasn’t great unless fitted with adaptive suspension. Wether this was also true of the 435d, I don’t know. Of course charging the springs to Eibach Pros would deal with the issue quite easily.

If I was making the decision, I would see what spec models were available. Things like sunroof, HUD, full leather, surround view, soft close doors, comfort access [IMG]
    etc, might be the decider.

The xDrive in the F3x versions all have the non MSport suspension, I think because of the drive chain requiring more clearance.
My F30 320i XDrive (from 2013) had a higher stance than the standard MSport version, the trade off was for a slightly comfier drive.
Worth comparing something like a 430d RWD MSport alongside the 435d XDrive, will give you an idea.

A very big thank you to all who have me advice.

I have to confess I have done some research and the trim level in the 6 is appealing, but the 4 series is tugging on my
    Heart strings.

Thanks again for all your helps fellow forumers.

Personally I’d go for the 640d all day long. The extra refinement and luxurious cabin absolutely do it for me. No offence to 4-series owners but the cabins on anything less than the 5ers feel low rent.

I’d also seek out: Adaptive Drive, Comfort Seats, HUD and Harman Kardon and you’ll have a lovely motor.

“Low rent” is a wee bit harsh.

    As spuff says
    640d all day long
Even more so in GC guise....
You just can’t say the 2 are anything alike...The 2 cars are miles apart...
1 is booked at around 70k + rrp and the other 50k rrp...
enough said... and the value will still be in it at the other end...

It is compared to a 6 series..
You need to try the 6 series and own one before you can comment.... leather dash, door cards door cappings etc ...
    And the refinement to boot...

Ceramic controls was another rare option on the 6 series. A solution for a problem you never knew you had

I’m sure it is a lovely place to sit, but saying the F3x interior is low rent isn’t fair/accurate. Compared to a more expensive car maybe so, but then you are paying more so would expect so.

Happy as Larry with mine, really enjoy the car in all respects. My friend is also very happy with his 640d, but he has a different expectation from his car.

Having driven his I can say it is brilliant. Quick, refined etc. But left me a little “meh” as it is a big cruiser of a car, whereas the F32 is a touch more sport focused. Even with the cheaper price point interior.

Perhaps a tad harsh but unless the individual extended leather (and dash) has been optioned, I do find the interior is lacking.

I absolutely loved our car.... if I didn’t have a caravan to move.... and a wet sand covered dog to shift ..... it’d be on my list again... one of the last few GC models ...!! Pre 8 series...

I agree. The 6 is a GT whilst the 4 has a sportier feel.

Also, one person’s soft suspension is another person’s hard. Personally I prefer a firmer ride, so much so in fact that I didn’t find the F10 MSport suspension sporty enough and had to stump up £2,700 for the adaptive drive option. Others complain that the standard M suspension is too hard, so it very much comes down to personal preference. Having driven a 5 series for around 8 years, I have appreciated the smaller dimensions of a C Class when it comes to parking and country roads, so that may be of importance for some.

As always, what do you want from your car? 435d is sportier - but as said the standard suspension on the x drive is lacking and if you really want a sporty drive you will want to upgrade. Refinement on motorway not meant to be the best. 640d is more luxurious but is more GT than sporty. And big to park and manoeuvre.

I'd say 440i. not x drive so better suspension. The B58 is brilliant and on a long run very economical considering the performance on tap. Personally I'd go GC for looks and practicality.

Or buy a Merc E400d coupe. Probably sits somewhere between the 4 series and 6 series in terms of sportiness but comfortable, refined, great interior.

6 series without question for me but then I am biased and I am on my second 640d GC.:sneaky: I had a brand new 430d GC for three weeks while my first 6 series was repaired after someone crashed into me in an airport carpark but I was very glad to get my car back. Yes the 4 series is smaller and down a country road probably more fun but the interior is much more like the 1 series my wife has than the 6 which is a way more special place to sit.

Both my 6 series had / have a few extra options such as HUD, comfort access etc and my latest has all those plus sunroof, HK sound, adaptive suspension on top of standard spec such as full leather dash and professional navigation. My second one is one of the last special edition M Sport models. I got it for a shade under £30K at 2.5 years old with 10K miles on the clock, a couple of photos of mine. It is a big car but with the optional reversing camera and surround view I have had no problems. I would suggest you test both (I got my first one at 45 and just turned 50 last Christmas)

Thanks to everyone who has provided me with information about which car to go for.

I have decided to wait until dealerships allow test drive's again and this will help with my decision, I know one thing that it will be between a 435d or a 640d both with M sport variant/option.

    Thanks again to all.
