Today thought I'd clean the hammock style cover I have on the back seats only to discover.

It wasn't there 3 months ago. I keep nothing in the back, anything that goes in comes out at the end of the journey.

The cover is a waterproof one, all the rest of the leather is perfect. I do clean and feed it all twice a year, using the same stuff.

To me it looks like water damage, but I can't for the life of me work out how.

Not sure it's water damage to be honest, could be a chemical/heat damage from the backing of the hammock cover?

What a shame! That must be so annoying. Is it worth contacting an upholsterer?

the back of the cover is absolutely fine, no damge to that what so ever. I agree it could be chemical or heat damage, the affected leather has gone very hard.

Well, I'm going to try some leather cleaner, then feed it with dubbin to see if I can improve it. I usually clean and feed all the leather once a year anyway, so I will see if I can improve it that way.

If not I have thought of seeing what it would cost to re-uphoster that bit.

That really does look like a strange bit of damage. Seems to have shrunk slightly.
Certainly worth a clean and re-nourish to see if you can bring the leather back.
On my F32 the steering wheel was damaged, or so it looked, after some research I used a hit (as hot as I could hold) wet micro fibre cloth. Rubbed the effected area, loads of muck came out, it also rejuvenated the area. Some leather cleaner and treatment and it was as good as new.

Well, cleaned it with leather cleaner then slathered plenty of dubbin on it, sadly not done much. Will persevere over the week, thinking I might try the hair dryer on it.

Might be time for some professional advice alternatively it'll be a second hand seat back at around £200-£250

I once.left an unwrapped magic tree type air freshener on a piece of plastic and it melted it! Could it be something like that?

For what it's worth I AI'd the picture and it seemed to think it was caused by pressure or heat or a combination of both, said it didn't look like water or chemical damage, of course AI is not always right...didn't seem to think it would be a DIY fix.

Thinking about it I did have sat on the back seat on the cover (which is absolutely perfect) a dehumidifier thing with the crystals in.

Crystals in top and collects water in bottom. It did draw out a lot of damp from the car (water in boot)

But I still can't see how it affected the leather directly underneath the waterproof cover.
