I currently have a one year BMW warranty with my car, and was intrigued to see what extending it would cost me. Lets face it one garage visit for anything is going to be around the £1k mark. I’m struggling to get info from BMW (anyone have a rough idea), Motor Easy have offered the following, which seems quite good. Anyone else extended theirs? I can set it up now and start paying in a years time when the BMW warranty expires. Will it qualify for the official BMW extended warranty in due course ? If so i am sure everyone on here will agree that the official BMW extended warranty is the one to go for. SWMBO X1 its £403 a year for comprehensive cover (including roadside assistance) with a £250 excess For my G30 its £678 a year same basis.
I've always had the BMW extended warranty at £522 pa fully comp. + £100 excess, and inclusive of BMW Emergency Recovery (UK and Europe). As long as the price remains the same, I'll keep renewing it
The official BMW Extended (Insured) Warranty is the only one worth having IMHO. Cost would likely be around £500 to £600 a year, once the car reaches three years old. My current car has a one year AUC Warranty but it has the original BMW new car warranty running forward until it reaches three years from date of first registration which is 18 months from now. I will 100% be opting for the BMW Extended Warrranty then. Along with the Europewide second to none breakdown service it's a no brainer for me. If your car is also an AUC it should be eligible for the extended warranty - unless you fit or do any mods to it of course.
As look would have it my renewal has just come through 2017 G30 520D I always opt for £250 excess / roadside recovery /comprehensive cover, and pay annually. For the first time the annual premium has increased this year up from £678 to £721 Paying monthly its 12 x £73 - so over £150 cheaper paying annually Given the cost of BMW parts and labour the smallest fault can soon land a 4 figure bill
What mileage are you at? With my F30 the renewals stayed the same until I passed some mileage 'waypoint' - 60K I think it was. I can't remember the exact figures - but after z certain points it's worth changing to pay monthly as the premiums then don't rise annually. I'm sure someone will come along soon to explain the benefit.
7 years old and milage 52,000 Mr Eds X1 was 6 years old and 59000 at renewal in Feb and premium unchanged
If you opt for a 3rd party warranty I’d ask them to print out the documents then you at least have the value of the paper they’re printed on in return for your cash, likely all you’d get from the plan.
So today's the day where I received the annual email from the BMW Insured Warranty people about renewing for another year. I first took this out in 2021 when the car was 3 years old. It was £678 for the year with a £250 excess. Same again, no price change, but also no claims made, in 2022 and 2023. The email said that this year, it would be £721. All good I thought. I log in, enter my details and put in the mileage which is now around 66,000. New quote: £1,767, or pay monthly for a mere £167. How much??? "You're 'avin' a laugh". Even if the mileage were below 60,000, they'd still want £1,130 or £109 a month. I'm highly inclined to take my chances and put £167 a month into a savings account and self-insure. What would you do in my situation? The only thing I need to do is get some breakdown cover which will work in both the UK and EU. A quick Google showed that this can cost no more than about £100 a year but there is a multitude of providers beyond the usual suspects like the AA, RAC and Green Flag. Does anyone have any recommendations or good experiences with any particular breakdown cover provider?
The G30/31's appear to be extremely reliable cars. Having said that insurance is there because there is a risk. Is it up to you to decide whether that risk is worth taking. I've never done extended warranties before and always come in on the right side especially with the F11 which was 7 years without a warranty. I have the same dilemma in October when my AUC warranty runs out. As for roadside assistant we have it included within our Nationwide joint account and covers the whole of the EU. The account costs £13 a month but also includes travel insurance and mobile phone cover for both of us.
What? That can't be right, surely.....I would ring them up and check the price quoted online is valid. I've a 2018 X3 and pay £56 per month with £250 excess for fully comp cover / no breakdown. I'm just getting £1,400 of work done though, all covered (front shocks, rear bearing and ride height sensors), so well worth it in my opinion. My dad has a G30 (530e) which has so far proved faultless, but I would always worry about a big bill around the corner, especially given he has the hybrid. In your case, I think if that quote is correct I would just lean toward putting the money in a savings account and take the risk, as long as you have a good independent garage you can take the car too, as the main dealer costs would very quickly eat that up.
My 2017 G30 has done about 52k. I renewed in June and figures were the same 721 up from 678. The annual premiums are well known for jumping up significantly once you reach 60,000 miles, im hoping that next year at renewal its still under 60,000 and I might then change to the monthly premium as apparently that may not change as mileage increases
Well, with that quote, I couldn't resist calling them up as @Highlander suggested and then using the phrase "You're 'avin' a laugh" on them. What follows may be beneficial to other folks on here like @edthefed perhaps... The over-the-phone quote came in at £1,063, which was with a £250 excess, comprehensive cover plus roadside assistance in the UK and EU. A big improvement but still a good chunk of change above the £721 indicated in the letter, so I asked what might be possible. It was explained to me that the additional sum was due to the mileage being over 60k. I was asked if I would renew at £1,063, so I said for that amount I'd have to think about it. I was then asked, if they could get the cost down to £721, would I renew, to which I said I would. I was put on hold for a few mins before a revised offer of £721 was forthcoming. It was explained that this was a special deal, etc., a 1-off and as from next year, they would not be able to do similar given my expected mileage. So, I gave my credit card some grief and renewed. Happy days!
For next year perhaps. The best breakdown assistance - other than the BMW one - is undoubtedly the ADAC. Any car, anywhere in the world, with all it's passengers. They would even fly you home from Australia or USA if you fell ill on holiday. 24 hour English speaking advisors and assistance that make the other providers look like amateurs - and at approx half the cost of anything British. Recovery vehicles, helicopters, ambulances - they have the lot. Free maps and tourist info plus a great on-line route-finder. Don't be put off by them trying to steer you towards the AA or the RAC who are their partners in the UK. I just insisted and stressed the fact that I do more kilometres in Germany / EU than in UK - a fact that they cannot check anyway.
That's good news, and just goes to show that, like all insurance companies, they are willing to haggle. I must admit that I have never taken out the extended warranty on any new car that I've owned, and have been extremely lucky as they proved very reliable. But with the BMW F30, I've paid the warranty every year (£520 pa, incl. of Emergency Service) mainly because BMW parts and repair costs can be expensive. Up to now though - no claims made and the 330d is proving to be ultra reliable.
A good result. The warranty renewal on my 2018 F06 640d came through the post a few weeks ago. As yours mine has been £678 but this year increased to £721. My mileage is currently 45K miles. I phoned and emailed trying to get the £721 reduced as I have never made a claim but they were having none of it. If I keep the car next year I will change to monthly before I get to 60k miles. On my previous E61 530i and the 2013 F06 640d the warranty paid for itself multiple times over but this car has proved much less troublesome making me wonder about whether it is worth it. As I have posted previously if any of you feel our warranty costs are excessive try getting a quote on extending it on a current 8 series.. The costs on extending it on a 2020 840i GC with 8K miles on the clock - that will be £2600 please sir..
Yep, I used to be a member of ADAC when I lived in Germany. Still read some of their road test reports on their website...
This is what confuses me - they have previously claimed that the price goes up with the size of the car. Yet a 2017 520d is the same price as a 640d which is a bigger car with 50 % more cylinders ! And my 520d was £721 this year yet Mrs Ed s 2.0 petrol X1 remained at £403
