    hi
Looking for advice on avoiding paying two lots of road tax in one month.
The Z3 is at present owned by my son,but I am now having it , he has gone to a Cooper S.
How do we do it so he pays the tax up to end of Aug ( or Sept) and I pay from 1st of next month.
We have not transferred ownership over at this point.
Before comments on him getting rid ,we both drive cars owned by either of us.

you would have to do the sale on 1st September, otherwise he would be automatically refunded for part of the month from the date of the sale/transfer to you and you would have to pay for all of the month.
if I have understood what you are asking.

If you do the 'sale' on the 1st of September you son will only get back the unexpired part - from October onwards - i.e. September is lost, as he was still the registered keeper on the 1st.

Your son and you have to fill in the V5C for change of keeper before the end of August and get it in the post right away so making sure that the postmark is August.

On the same day as the put on the V5C for change of keeper you use the V5C part 2 to declare SORN immediately.

Then on the 1st of September you tax it online which takes it off SORN so you pay from September onwards.

Thanks for that , seeing as son is in London, I am in North Wales[ + Bank Holiday weekend], it will have to wait until end of September.
    Thanks for help.

Yes - they certainly do go by the postmark - my old dad got caught out posting late at night on the last day of the month - he disputed it but they had recorded the postmark as the 1st of the next month.

The free certificate of posting is of course the answer.

I changed my car in mid/late June.

New car had to pay June tax onwards.

Old car got refunded August onwards.

So, both cars I paid June (expected) AND July (not expected), because the DVLA didn't process it until late July.

Something far wrong there - have you proof of posting the V5C to DVLA ? If so complain.

If it was a trade-in with a dealer involved at some point I would be complaining strongly to them too..

Yes - the new owner buys the car and immediately SORNs it - then taxes it on the first day of the next month thereby cancelling the SORN.
