I had a HUD in two F10s and in my wife’s M3 and I really like it as a glance to speed check is quicker, plus I found directions when following sat nav so easy. Yes if you turn the HUD off you get the directions on the black panel display, but it takes a fraction of a second to refocus, but hey, we are all different.

The M3 has a Rev counter along with change lights on the HUD in sports mode - definitely not essential when going to the supermarket

One little funny, was that I had a pre LCI and an LCI and there were functions available which were deliberately not enabled on the pre eg phone list and music. I guess they have to hold some things back to make the LCI seem better!!

    I don’t mind the hud
But it wouldn’t be a deal breaker
Sat nav on the screen, sat nav in the binnacle and sat nav on the hud
Really...!!! It’s too much overkill and unnecessary...we need to be shedding info you don’t need .. it’s too distracting...
aircraft are now designed with a ‘dark cockpit’ philosophy... only show the pilot what he needs to know... not what he doesn’t.. I’m all for decluttering..

A total of four methods of notification if you have the voice turned on too !

I remember a Saab model (possibly a 9000 ?) had a blackout button, that disabled everything but the speedometer for night driving. Maybe due to the aircraft connections of the company.

I’ve had 11 Saab’s over the years, all models had the blackout function. Some said it was an aircraft gimmick, but in reality it was really helpful. Driving in the dark you could set which dials it blanked out, radio display etc would go off, only leaving the speedo lit. If a gauge showed a change in read out, file low or temp high, they would light up to warn.

l am another HUD convert and l used to write it off as a gimmick but now l have it l love it and would certainly miss it if l didn't have it

the cabin of my car lights up like a Christmas tree at night and l love it and a blackout function on my car would be the least used button in the car. all the dash lights are dimmable as are all the ambient lights l have them set at a mid point and love the cabin being lit at night

I frequently turn the iDrive screen off when driving at night. Much less distraction.

Simple to do with a voice command - "Screen Off"

I agree - mine is all red - like in a submarine or a Bell-Huey helicopter.

Red is not a distraction at all for me.

Didn't BMW themselves refer to it at some point as "cockpit lighting"?

I loved the classic “red glow” in the E36/E46 era cars.

I am in the same boat, or perhaps you could say the same cabin. I find it particularly useful especially on the new LCI X1 when driving into/through complex road junctions. Instead of watching the main map, I just follow the arrow on the HUD.

    Just remember
In the aircraft pilot world it’s about not overloading with too much information....the pilot only needs to know what they ‘need to know’
But alerting you to new fault or failure which will illuminate, in white..( system status)
yellow /amber.... ( system minor failure)
Or red ( system major failure )
Don’t forget the pilot is working in a 3 dimensional world... not 2 dimensions as in a car...so distractions are more of an issue than in a car...especially in a landing phase or critical flight phase...

All of those show the mpg readout at 90mpg+. I’d suggest that the car has the “coast” feature selected in the eco-pro menu. That allows the car to essentially drop the engine revs to nothing as it rolls, usually under braking whilst moving or going downhill. A recent trip in a news G20 320i showed the same feature, not the same as my F32 at all. Far more obvious in the drop of revs.

Try dropping it into Sport, it won’t do the same in that.

I havent read the whole thread again...
    But as wynne71 says
    That is coasting mode.....
Engine dies and car is disconnected from the gearbox/s
It does it only when the conditions are right.... so you cruising along a long road and lift off as you approach a roundabout a long way in front or a long downhill section etc etc...
If you touch the brake or accelerator it will re engage.... as has been said sport mode disables this function
The operation in our x5 is totally seemless... so much so I didn’t know it was doing it for 6 months until my wife spotted it and we had to read the manual.. !!
