In 2016 I had a seizure during sleep. Had all the tests and the specialist could not find epilespy and put it down to stress from work. Was banned for six months as per regulations.

Last August had another sleep seizure. Due to covid we have been working extra hours as we do payroll and accounts. Processing clients furlough payments and it's been frankly hell. We are effectively keeping 300 people in work. Just myself and my wife.

Reported it to DVLA as instructed to by the hospital. Again specialist said stress related. Unfortunately the specialist who I was seeing privately died recently from pancreatic cancer and was unable to communicate his findings with DVLA or my GP.

Heard from DVLA on Wednesday who banned me until 12 months from the date of the seizure which will be early August. Of course the whole letter process was delayed due to covid.

Spoke to the GP who said there's nothing they can do.

Haven't really driven since August anyway because of the lockdown so it's not an issue.

I do feel a bit cheated as the specialist told me verbally that he would tell DVLA that he believed I shouldn't be banned.

Not much I can do and I have to look at it as only being three months.

However they say you re apply 8 weeks before the years is up.

Would people advise applying earlier due to the backlog of everything?

I've ordered the form DL1 from them.

    Thanks!

    Simon

Sorry to read about your circumstances, Simon .

In your position I would follow their requirements to the letter as I don't believe the system can handle 'one off' situations - but wouldn't rule out phoning them as I've found them helpful in the past. I suspect you'll get nowhere, though.

The specialist you were seeing privately must have kept patient notes - can you not get access to them and use them to strengthen your case?

    Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I may try calling but as you say will probably get nowhere. If it was 10-12 months I probably won’t drive myself mad with it. Would you advise applying before 8 weeks or wait till beginning of June?

Only if you have independent substantiating 'evidence' that you'd be OK to drive now.

sorry to hear that you have had your licence revoked or suspended due to a medical condition
they do take unexplained seizures very seriously and they do like a clear 12 months before allowing you to drive again

it happened to a work colleague of mine and he had to finish work as he was unable to drive for nearly three years in the end

lets hope you can go the 12 months clear and get your licence back in august
