I was booked to stay in a village called Little Langdale for two nights, Friday and Saturday, however, due to family circumstances, I was not comfortable staying for both nights, so drove back late last night. My youngest son, 23, is about to start his training as a detective in the Cornwall and Devon Police, he wanted a few days away to experience some of the countryside our country offers. He booked an Air BnB for five nights, hence me deciding to stay over for two nights. I drove up after work on Friday, 3 hours 45 mins of the finest M6 traffic. Arrived and met him for a pint and some food, we planned the walk for Saturday and got a good nights rest. After a fabulous Saturday morning breakfast we met and set out. I've got the OSMaps app, had downloaded a decent walk up and around Rough Crags, Swirl How and back down to the Greenhorn valley. There was snow on the top of the hills, I'd driven through this from Windermere to Little Langdale, it looked absolutely stunning. The weather was somewhat on/off, but we managed to see some great landscapes and skylines. 8 miles later, we were suitably shattered, a coffee and flapjack back at my pub/hotel (Three Shires Inn in Little Langford, can totally recommend this place, fantastic.), then a few hours of chill. We met for an evening meal and then I dropped him off at his digs before hitting the journey home. Easy drive back to be fair, very limited traffic on the M6. I did stop at Knutsford for a comfort break and to grab a coffee. Glad I did stop as 2-3 miles after the services there had been a 7/8 car crash. The motorway was down to one lane from four as the cars were in the outside two and inside one lanes, it looked to have been very recent, as the emergency services weren't on scene and folk were sitting on the central reservation and hard shoulder looking somewhat bewildered. I could easily have been caught in that. Back home for 11pm, parked up, unloaded and and went to bed. Really glad I went as I needed the headspace, the hills and time with my lad were perfect. Back to reality and the challenges of family life now. A few photos from the trip:
Nice place to stay and best of luck to your son in his job but tell him to mind his back in this PC Woke world of today glad i got out when i could with a nice pay off
Forgot to add that the G22 was brilliant. The drive up was so easy, traffic/rain/snow/motorway/A road/mucky B roads, all handled without fuss or drama. The journey back was effortless, silky smooth engine and transmission, super comfy cabin and seats. To be fair it could have been a 420d for this journey, but the dark and weather doesn't really allow for any Sport mode antics. After leaving home I stopped on the A5 to fill up and grab a bite to eat, the journey after that looked like this:
Thanks for the write up and apart from the beautiful scenery, I’m stunned by your fuel economy considering what your engine is capable of!! Really proves what a great all rounder it is. I don’t think I have ever achieved 30mpg in mine
Superb, we love visiting the Lakes for our walks, we're off to The Grand At Grasmere later this month as a birthday treat. Lovely little village away from busy Windermere and a non challenging walk up Helm Crag nearby. Have been visiting the area since the mid 90’s, usually around Easter time. I'll suggest we pay a visit to the Three Shires Inn in Little Langdale this time on your recommendation... it will make a change from Stickle Barn we've ended up in the past. Thanks
Great pics and so pleased you had a great weekend, even if it was a bit shorter than you were planning. I have some similar ones to share from the weekend away with my daughter just gone - I'll do so on my Knaus BoxDrive thread. Wish your Son all the best for his new career. I applied to become a Special Constable with Essex Police back in 2011/12. Got through all the exams, Medical, Fitness and started training only to find that my then Wife was pregnant and forbade it. Have often wondered how exciting that bit of my life could've been or if it would've taken me down a completely different route. I wish him well.
The lad went on his final hike today, he did a decent job to be fair, 12.4 miles in total. I’m sat in front of a keyboard, a monitor and Teams meetings all day…..slightly jealous of him!
I think I’ve done that walk, I’ve definitely done Skelwith Bridge, doesn’t that lead to cathedral quarry? I absolutely love it around there and have been every August since 2011. I always stay at the Lakeside Hotel as that’s where we got married. Being based in London, it’s so nice to get away from it all. Have you been to North Lakes? Lodore Falls is a decent ramble.
The Langdales are a great neck of the woods in the Lakes, takes you nicely to Wrynose Pass, Hardknott Pass (stop at the Roman Fort, staggering views up and down the Valley), a pit stop at the Woolpack Inn before cracking on to Birker Fell (the best driving road in the Lakes, by a distance) then on to Ulpha before joining civilisation at Duddon Bridge. Great pics and views.
Nice post and pictures, all the best to your son in his career! Hope your family circumstances are ok also. I used to go on hols to lake district as a kid, sadly I don't recall the walks we went on as must of been over 30 years ago now. Always liked it up there but is a long drive, a good 5-6hours. Used to stay in a Lodge and then in later years couple of B&B's if just 2 of us going. Kev
Some epic roads in the lakes, looks a lovely spot too. Where was the rest of the breakfast, that wouldn't touch the sides with me We were in Coniston last weekend with MINI club. The snow had gone but boy it rained on the Saturday night.
