With me now looking after my boy’s cars, I have been buying tools that I have managed without for years

    It’s been a welcome relief from lockdown.[IMG]

Haha, no I do have a torque wrench. It must be 30 years old mind.

I used to make do with using an old damaged torque wrench as a breaker bar.

It was damaged undoing wheel nuts that had been over tightened on a 1987 SRi 130 that I owned at the time. I had new tyres fitted and when I got home, went to slacked them off so that I could ensure them were torqued correctly. They were so bloody tight that I also sheared an extension bar.

l have just bought a new torque wrench to swap wheels summers to winters but l forgot l don't have winter wheels for the new car

    www.tengtools.com/r/gb/en/Torque-Equipment-1/2inch-Drive-200Nm

l had an old draper wrench that came apart so rather than try and put it back together l went for a new one and got the Teng for under £90.00 online

Did l need it? probably not. Did l want it? of course l did you got to love shiny new tools

    Tools? Tools?

I got more tools than you could shake a stick at ! :)

Apart from what I carry in the boot of the car for emergency use - which of course i haven't needed for the last 10 years or so - I have several large tool-boxes in the garage, plus the walls are lined with assorted stuff such as valve-spring compressors and bearing pullers ........... not to mention timing lights or feeler guages for plug gaps or ignition points.

"Ignition points? What are they?" I hear the under 50's exclaim.

I've got one box full of the old Imperial A/F stuff which started to become obsolete when Ford introduced the Capri and the Escort - IIRC my Mexico which had a Cortina 1600GT engine and a Capri back axle was amazing to work, on as Ford had just cobbled it all together with assorted bits from the Rallye Sport warehouse in South Ockendon.

I'm bang up to date though - I have a range of these new-fangled so-called security socket stuff - the star shaped with both five and six points with a little recessed pin-hole which defeat the majority of folks who have to go to the likes of Halfrauds to get a light-bulb changed because they can't open the housing/fitting with a London pattern screwdriver or a carving knife.

Then of course I inherited tools from my Dad - who had done the European Tour with the Caernarvon & Denbigh Yeomanry Medium Regiment Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1939 to 45 - and returned with the finest Gedore socket sets amongst other things that I dare not mention.

Despite the above, I like wandering through the likes of Halfrauds doing a spot of 'window-shopping' or scanning through a catalogue from Sctewfix or Snap-On.

But I'm shocked by the prices of quality tools these days.

    Keep buying though guys there's nothing better than a well-stocked man-cave. (y)

0800 777 111 or 020 8686 2444 have replaced my emergency tool kit in the boot

and all the tools that l collected during my apprenticeship have all long gone mainly Britool whitworth and lots of other long forgotten spanner sizes that you cant find in halfords and they now mainly live in old men's sheds or under a table at a boot sale with a 50p price tag on them

but l do still have a good selection of metric tools that do see the light of day if and when required :rofll::rofll:

I would have to agree - I only really carry enough to change to the spacesaver - plus gloves and a big bag for the dirty punctured wheel.

I have both those phone numbers on speed-dial on my moblile - don't forget the International one needs to be saved as:
    +44 20 8686 2444

I know one can use the i-drive to get help - which would be my method of choice - but I once was foolish enough to get locked out - keys left in the boot.

My son still uses Whitworth , and he seems to have acquired my old long bar ,its actually a 1" drive so will shift most nuts . I have recently seen a scaffold tube over that one , amazing whats required when you still have Ser 1 Land Rovers. His main socket set is a large Britool bought in around 1986 at a fraction of the price of Snap On replaced 4 sockets -3 due to loss one broke,so still big saving. The only Snap On I ever bought was to take the rear door window out of a eary RR ( with the 2.5 VM engine), and that broke removing the screws. The garage even contains a few very large flogging spanners up to 48mm bolt dia, even have a socket for that one. Yes it amazing what we acquire over the years.

Gedore... that takes me back a bit.

My original socket set was a Britool kit like this. Whitworth and A/F

    Britool Socket Set 800.jpg

Still have a Britool kit the same, but not my original. Sold it to a mate as part of buying a car. Regret that and bought another set second-hand.

My last socket set purchase was a Connex 'pass through' set. Connex Pass Through Socket Set.jpg

My Whitworth collection is still with me. Bought over 50-years ago while apprenticed, and still in excellent condition. Stahlwille, one of the best products available at the time. The picture shows my smallest ring, 1/8" and largest size, 13/16". (Against an M8 nut and threaded bolt).

Haha, the biggest I have is a 30mm hub nut socket, so a toy compared to your kit

Here's a couple of pics of three of my Gedore boxed sets:

    20210411_143325[1].jpg

    20210411_143435[1].jpg

The middle box in German Army Felgrau (Field Grey) is the one that my Dad 'acquired' in 1944 near Bochum after he crossed the Rhine.

Like Peter I too have a full set of Whitworth spanners plus countless other in open end, ring and combination form. many of which I haven't seen for years never mind needed or used.

Some day I might get them all laid out and take a pic or two - for posterity of course.

Mine is limited these days, compared to when I had my first and second workshops. My socketry included American 'Craftsman' 3/4" & 1" drive, up to 2 1/2" AF sockets.

Sometimes I wish I still had the kit, but life changed. Along the way space and storage became an issue, so lots of kit had to go. It's now more my treasured personal kit, and buy tools on a "needs must" basis.

Anyone still got any of their original power tools?

I still have my first DIY level B&D 1/2" chuck, 2-speed drill. Still works, although pensioned off. Bought about 49 years ago.

Also have a working Wolf (industrial quality) 9" angle grinder. Bought in 1978, for fabrication work. At the time I had a 3-phase 300 amp English Electric arc welder. Best power curve on any arc welder I have ever used. Used one at Tech College, (my favourite machine), so sought out the same model when in business. Now all I have is an old and pathetic SIF 150 amp, that is so bad I wonder why I ever kept it when my father died.

I could, and probably should, start a shop :whistling:.

Lathe, welder, plasma cutter, vintage pillar drill, metal/wood cutting mitre saw, small milling machine, etc etc - including 5 x angle grinders - well, what can I say, I hate stopping mid job to change over to the disc I need

My pal thinks I'm mad, but he appreciated the weather vane I made for him

Still got my trusty old Wolf drill from around 1972 and my Perles hammer drill from 1984 which followed me home from the Middle East in hand baggage. :D
