Hi my names Ashley, I've just joined as I've recently sold a Mercedes and want to return to BMW ownership. I've owned quite a few over the last 20 years, (driving for 23) inc e24, e28, e34, e36, e38, e39, e46, e60 and a e90. I've had a couple of Z3's too, don't know the code. I'm considering a e65/66 but know very little about them, so really need some advice!! Cheers
Hi Ashley - welcome to the forum. The only member I can think of with an E65 was @Harry who had a 750i some time ago. Otherwise not very common on here. Good luck with the search.
Thanks, yeah I've had quite a few, most high mileage TBH, so they weren't expensive. The M52 was a pretty nice engine, seemed to wear it's miles well!!!
Welcome, never had a 7 series but I believe a lot of car for the money Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
Hi Ashley I have owned a few different models of BMWs over the last 30 years or so, and my last one was a 730d Sport E65, of which I can highly recommend. When I bought it , it was to replace a 5 series E39. The E65 was the best car I had ever owned in my life, and other than the usual running costs I never had any problems at all. When I retired, I decided that I would splash out and buy a used BMW 730d M Sport x drive, in Carbon Black with Ivory Nappa leather, with more add ons than I will ever use. Now THIS car is the best I have ever owned ! In my opinion, you will not go far wrong with the E65, and I would still be driving the one I had if I hadn't had a brain storm and decided to spend part of my kids inheritance on myself as a retirement present to myself! If you do get an E65, make sure you get a set of winter wheels and tyres for the snow, as there is nothing more embarrassing than being stuck on a hill with an inch of snow on th ground, watching all the small cars going past you, pointing at the big BMW that can't move. I bought a set after that, and can honestly say that you can drive almost anywhere with the snow tyres fitted. Good luck in your search. There are some bargains to be had out there, but there are also some wrecks!
Thanks, what year is your 7, sounds awesome TBH, but far more than I have to spend sadly!! I'll open another thread, be great to get your advice.
My cars is a 2016 model g11. I bought it when it was 30 months old from a main dealer, and inherited the remaining warranty and the remains of a five year service pack. If I can manage to get some photos loaded I will post a new thread to show you the car. You asked about the E65, and I can truly say if you can get your hands on a good low milage car, with loads of extras at the right price, I doubt that you will want to go back to a 5 series any time soon! Do your homework. I spent a couple of months searching Auto trader and other sites, just to see what you could get on the g11. You can then see what is on the different cars, then decide what you want on yours, then search for the car with everything on it that you want. But it all depends what you want from a car. As previously mentioned, I am now retired, and I love the absolute luxurious pace and grace that the 7 series gives you, as well as the 265bhp that is there when I decide to give it a bit of a run.
I just want it for occasional use, I cycle everywhere locally, so it's just for trips further out etc, doubt I'll exceed 3k a year. My plan was to just get the best cheap one I could find with everything working, and see what happens? Feel free to be critical or whatever, honesty's the best way.
As a guide for you, I part exchanged my 10 year old E65 730d Sport with around 90,000 miles on the clock, and got less than £4000 knocked off my new car. Everyone I spoke to after said they would have had it had they have known I was selling it. The car was in excellent condition for the year, relatively low milage, serviced every year, (the last service was 2 months before I swapped it). I checked the reg number on the MOT site recently and it passed 2 MOTs with no advisories, which is proof of its good conditon. I can't criticise anyone who wants to own an E65 as they are great cars. I could have kept mine for a few more years without any big bills coming in, but I just decided that the new G11 was such a brilliant car that I decided to buy one before I became to old to appreciate the quality of it. It doesn't matter how young you feel, old age creeps up on you before you know it. I have had comments about why I have the 2 televisions and computer pad for the back seats passengers, and the colour changing interior lights, and the switchable fragrant air fresheners, but its all part of the package that was in the car, so I always say to them, what you have done, ask for them to be taken out? The car has 20" M Sport wheels fitted and it is a dream to drive. I even have heated massage seats in it to add to the comfort. Being the X Drive, I don't even have to worry about a bit of snow falling when I am out and about (unlike the E65 ! ) In conclusion, you want a BMW E65, just get one ! You won't regret it. You really do get a lot of car for your money.
Yeah agree that's a lot of car for the money, and given how few are being bought new at the moment, it may hold it's value better than you originally expected. I'm looking at spending under 5k, if I get three years and then have to scrap it I'd be happy! I'll set up a thread and get some technical opinions on engine choice etc.
Welcome to the forums When i was looking for my F10 550i, i printed off the brochure for the car, then highlighted all the options i had to have, the ones i would like to have and then the others were the ones i could live without, then i asked the sellers for the full list of options from the VIN number and checked them against what i wanted. I was very lucky as there were very few 550i's around when i was looking and i found mine with very low mileage, and everything i had to have, and only missed out on two would be nice to have, both of which i have discovered can be retrofitted to the car, so who knows................ Good luck with the search
Hi, sorry I disappeared, thanks again for all your kind replies. I've actually just bought a VW Phaeton, got it for under 2k, so it's probably going to break, piss me off and get scrapped or whatever! So once that happens I'll be back, and probably looking for a 7 again. In the mealtime thanks again, this is a very helpful and friendly place.
Hi @ashleycook An interesting choice you have bought, I wouldn’t feel you have to depart a growing community just because the bonnet badge Many of us have done similar, what with so much choice in the market, deep down it’s more the ownership journey, banter & giggles Come back and tell us how life is with the Phaeton - big beasts!
