A few ways to go about that. Official BMW maps, either through a download/USB from their website. You will need a Connected Drive account for this. Or, contact Cotswold BMW via this website and they will probably be able to send you the USB direct. Go to a third party provider and get the slightly unofficial route. I bought the USB update from Cotswolds in Nov last year, my car still had the license key active so the cost was minimal. Since then I’ve bought the Connected+ package which has map updates as they come out, downloaded onto the PC then onto USB. Easy to do.
I used to get mine for €15 a year from a nice man in Munich called Florian who sent me both Europe East and Europe West on a memory stick. The original official BMW unlocking code worked perfectly on them. He doesn't do it at the moment thanks to Brexit, but he's working on it. My Plan B is to wait for Black Friday in November.
So do you reckon my code that I had when I would download when I had the connected subscription would work if I downloaded the map update? I think BMW used to text me the code and it was always the same!
I would say 99% certain. As far as I can remember the codes were exactly the same all the time I had an official BMW update subscription - and I've just kept on using it.

Looks like Europe NEXT 2022-1 maps are out for my F11, but even with an active subscription the BMW download manager isn't offering me anything other than 2021-1 maps. Any clue why this might be?

The latest update for our F25 X3 (Europe WEST Next 2022-1) has just dropped today on the Download Manager.
Download Manager is the BMW specific software. You download a copy of this and then access the map updates via your ConnectedDrive log-in.

Map updates are published multiple times per year. They are available as a one- or two-year subscription in the BMW Shop. If you have an active subscription, to update your map data, you can download the latest update from the BMW Connected Drive portal, using the BMW Update Manager. To do this, you will need to use the following steps and will require a 64GB FAT-32 formatted USB drive. Firstly, log-in to your My BMW Account using the icon in the site header. Navigate to ‘My Vehicles’. Select the vehicle for which you want to download a map update. Navigate to ‘Map update’ section. A message will display if a new map version is available. Click ‘To manual map update’ link and download the BMW Update Manager. Login to the BMW Update Manager with your My BMW credentials and select the vehicle that you would like to update the map for. After copying the map data to a 64GB FAT-32 formatted USB drive, you can proceed to load it into the vehicle following the instructions in the appropriate video below. The process is slightly easier after the first time as the Download Manager stays on your desktop so you can go straight into it on each subsequent occasion.
