Got to ask... what's the reasoning for the bra, just for long trips? Is the risk any higher than for local driving? Or are you going on a trip where you know the roads are covered with debris.

I had a screen smashed, just going into town.

Well as we all know BMW paint is rather hard... I.e brittle.

Obviously the impact of a stone at let's say 70 mph will have a far more damaging effect, than let's say driving at 30 mph or pootling around town at 20mph (y)

I take it you don't drive many open roads in your normal driving. Up here there is the potential for stones flying around virtually every local trip.

BMW paint does seem prone to stone chipping. Fortunately, I only have a couple on the bonnet - it's the bumper that has more. If I keep the car I'll just get it resprayed at some point.

The worst thing in the depths of winter is when your in a stream of traffic, and the gritting wagon comes in the opposite direction with the sprayer going full whack. Nothing you can do, except cringe and grit your teeth. (excuse the pun).
