I've recently done an online quote for some winter tyres from Costco - Michelin Pilot Alpin 225/45 R18 95v runflats. They are priced at £142 each fully fitted, which is an exceptional price. The only problem is that they are not BMW (*) rated tyres as my car is an xDrive, but as my winter setup is the same all round, I'm tempted to take the chance that they shouldn't cause problems with the transfer box.

What are other members opinions? Is it worth taking the chance, or should I stick religiously to only fitting BMW (*) rated tyres?

I would not worry too much concerning fitting the of non * rated tyres. There is some anecdotal evidence on other forums saying that BMW could question the tyres if you were to have a problem with the transmission components on the car if it is still under warranty. Again in my view, if all the tyres were of the same make and tread depth, they (BMW) would have a hard time saying that the tyres were causing a transmission problem if there was one.

I recently wrote to the CEO of BMW UK concerning my new X1 and asked if I would have a problem concerning the warranty of the transmission components if I fitted one of 3 different manufactures of "all-season tyres" none of which were * rated.
I wanted to fit Michelin all-seasons that could be specified on the US cars on the production line, but not on UK cars. They said that that the Michelin tyres were not available to the testers when the car came onto the market, so they could not homologate them. They also said that they BMW do not make tyres (yes we all know that), so they would take the advice of the tyre manufacturers in the unlikely event of a problem. I cannot see Michelin advising BMW that it was their (Michelin's) fault if there were problems. Would you?
If it is just a winter setup I would go ahead. After all, a tyre is a tyre. If you understand my meaning?

It's well nigh impossible to find anyone with runflat OE BMW (*) rated Winters.

Many stockists have that size only in the XL version.

My Contis are actually MO rated non-runflats and I'm not overly concerned - (wish I'd bought the runflat version though)

I'm aware that X-drives need extra attention to fitments - but for a square Winter set up I would personally go ahead with the Michelins.

Do they have any rating at all - MO, N, or AO ?

    How much cheaper is cheaper?

Also you refer to a set ofwinters, is this a second set of wheels you have?

Any issues and quickly swap the original * rated ones back on ;)

I have a set of 2 series Gran tourer wheels that have that size on 225/45/18 all with 6mm runflat star rated Pirelli tyres on I only used them for 2 winters if interested ?
I will check the rating but think they are 95V rated they were on my wifes 2016 220d Xdrive which has now been replaced with a 1 series .

I can get BMW (*) rated runflats in Pirelli Sottozero (currently fitted) for £168, but I think that there will be a fitting fee on top. Plus they could also supply Continental winter runflats, but more expensive. But I've always been a Michelin fan, and the Costco price of £142 fitted for the Pilot Alpin is unbeatable.
There's no urgency, as I have 4.0mm tread left on the Pirelli winters. I'll probably get the Michelins when I change back to the summers.
Thanks for the offer @Arl10 , but I'm guessing that it's for wheels and tyres? I already have a good set of winter alloys, so only need replacement tyres.

I would agree with Bob said above
As an aside we have a brand new 69 plate, x drive, X5...( 10 months old now..)
The standard 22 inch tyres...* marked. They Are different sizes fronts and backs... by .5 % diff..... to start with.. straight out of the showroom..) there is a 3mm diff in the dia from new......( the dia will only become exactly equal when the front tread is at 7mm and the rear is at 4mm...) per say..
So if that’s good enough for bmw... from brand new, it makes you wonder about all this ‘must have Same tyre tread all round +/- 2mm’ for the xdrive .. doesn’t it..?
(A point to note.... the door code sticker for the smaller wheels, 21 and 20 etc etc.... the tyres at the same dia all round.... but not with the 22’’ wheels !)
I would buy the tyres while the Costco deal is on....
