    This is on point.

I have the same gripe about modern garages. This issue is not confined to BMW dealers.

Real mechanics who are willing to talk through issues explore possibilities and diagnose FOC are few and far between. This is the reason I only take my BMWs to 1 man who I have known for 20 years and only works on BMWs, and now my Subaru to a specialist who has worked on Subarus for 40 years.

'Proper' mechanics enjoy what they do, and in the process provide good service.

Suggesting the mark of a real mechanic is diagnosing your car FOC is ridiculous and I very much doubt your chosen mechanic does your car FOC.
I agree that some dealer technicians are only capable of spinning filters and I’d even say that some aren’t capable of that but that also applies to specialists and numerous independents. At the same time I know some Dealer techs who are some of the best mechanics I’ve ever encountered.

Most dealer techs won’t diagnose a car FOC because we are in business...

You don’t get a plumber coming round to your house to look at your boiler for free.

Unless it's a complex, labour intensive job to diagnose it is FOC. If you like I'll give you both their details, evidently a rare thing.

Of course there are dealer techs who are experienced and indy garages that are useless... I've experienced both, however corporate policies in bigger garages do affect the level of service by seeking to charge very highly to cover high overheads with largely computer based diagnosis.

I take your point though, a FOC diagnosisis rare nowadays and I'm probably benefitting from having years of work done by my BMW indy and a very friendly Subaru specialist.

If you're a regular over years then yes he probably might overlook a few expenses, almost on a mates rates kind of basis but only because he's getting money from you in another form. You will usually get a more personable service from a small garage as the often the guy doing the work is also the guy taking the cash.
Believe it or not dealerships do sometimes build up relationships with regular customers but its much harder to achieve due to number of staff and turnover etc. Also the tech in the dealership is on the clock needing to make his time productive for a managers figures to look good for his manager, its a lot more difficult for things to be FOC.

Point to note on this.. I went to the parts department a few days ago.

I asked the lovely lady there, she said it's because they are franchises and it's all governed by the head office.

She did however give me a number for a good Indy (y)
wish she'd given me her number too !

I bought a rocker cover breather pipe (one from head to turbo) that had a split in it.
