To change the car or not to change, that is the question.

The other question is what should l change it for if I do decide to change?

I’ve had the 2012 E92 320d for two years now, for many of you that would be the familiarisation period, for me it is a record. Longest I’ve owned a car before was 22 months. Fickle.
The car has been superb, apart from the usual maintenance I’ve not had to spend on repairs thus far, but, it is over 8 years old and has 84K on the clock. So time will be ticking on repairs.
It needs new rear discs and pads, advisory on the past two MOTs and it does need doing. The ZF6 box will need an oil/filter change before the 100K mark.
I love the looks of the E92, the handling, build quality etc, just a great car.

However, I’ve been looking at what next. An M4 is the perfect next step, but the reality of running an M car is stopping me. The car would be 4-6 years old so would need some regular maintenance etc. This and insurance/fuel etc would all add up to make it unviable as an everyday car.
I don’t want a pretend coupe (GC), don’t need four doors, so have settled on a 4 series coupe as the more than likely next option. The 435d looks very good on paper, but only seems to come in xDrive option, changes the stance of the car. Minor gripe but I am being fussy.
440i seems to be the right balance of performance, looks, price, equipment etc. For the price point I’m looking at I would be looking at a 2017/18 model, sub 30K miles.

The M240i looks great, but is possibly a bit too small for me, need to get my road bike in the boot. Also just isn’t the right look as far as coupes go, unless it is in M2 guise, but then the costs shoot up.

G30 540i seem great, but a big car! They are massive. Stocked with kit and performance though, I looked at loads of these on line last night. A possibility.

As you can tell, a wee bit all over the place. Thoughts?

I tend to think it's best to keep a reliable car and the moment it plays up is the moment to change. Is it worth costing the cost of new discs and run for another 15k then trade in at main dealer?

I have the G31 540i and love it. I found the used 540i much better loaded with kit than used 530d. In terms of size, it's loaded with parking sensors, so you park by the beeps; you do need slightly longer spaces, so parking in busy cities may be an issue.

The fuel economy takes a hit though; I'm getting 17mpg on long town runs, and about 26 to 30 on A roads and motorways. That said, I find the economy mode much more smoother than comfort or sport mode if the road is flat; the opposite of economy mode in my previous 535d.

I forgot to say, I prefer xDrive, as it's good at good at putting the traction down from the B58 engine.

Have your running costs remained the same during Covid? If not as many miles maybe time to treat yourself.

I agree a test drive is in order to make you decide.

In 2017 I did 32K miles, 2018 22K miles, 2019 12K miles and so far in 2020 I’ve done 5K. So yes COVID has certainly put an dent in my mileage. These miles were in my car, Sept 2018 onwards in the BMW.
I’ve got access to enterprise hire cars for work (over 150 mile round trip), and get a decent 45p per mile if I’m use my own. Since lock down we have switched work to mainly home based, with 1/2 days travel per week max. I see this staying the same well into 2021.
Hence the move to petrol being on the radar.

The idea of keeping the E92 is very sensible, does everything I need and I really like the car. But, the draw of a change is strong.....

Thanks for the feedback. Does sound like a great package, even if the mpg made me gulp a touch. Ha.

I work on the basis that you are a long time dead!!!!!!! You want an M4 so just do it. They are not hideously expensive to run, tax is around £300ish I think but the warranty is around £850 with £250 excess.

Fuel consumption is not bad given the performance and they have plenty of tech as standard. And you get to do the carpark lookback with a satisfied grin lol.

I had a few proper M cars but then had to go for the derv options due to divorce but I will say that as soon as I could i got back in an M and I don't regret it for one second.

You have one life so don't deny yourself what you really want. Get the man maths calculator out and do it.

I like your positive outlook, although Mrs W number two might not be so keen! And I certainly can’t afford a second divorce....

340i touring from around 2017 with some tasty options would be my choice. I almost bought one but it was missing the memory seats which I had on the last three cars. Great looking cars and decent noise.

Had a quick look on AT and it seems the touring is more expensive than the coupe, possibly down to rarity.

M4 has memory seats as standard

I must be lucky, my other half encourages me to have a silly car, in fact she has said I must never sell it as she likes it so much, but I can have another, I just can't sell this one :rofll:. So I will get an M2 to accompany this one after our wedding in 18 months and she can smoke around in the M2 lol

M4s can be had for reasonable money now - just saying

I wouldn’t disagree with what you have said, apart from the fact that the M3 is the better looking car...[IMG][IMG]

I would personally go M3 as well, I like the 4 door look.

Fabulous looking car, although those Comp wheels look like a right PITA to clean..!
Like the 340i estate is more expensive than the F82 version, the M3 seems to be more expensive than the M4 as a used option. Supply and demand I would assume.

Yes, they sold a lot more M4’s than M3’s, perhaps even 10 to 1?

The M666 comp rims are a PITA for sure.

One of the less common options is full leather which adds the leather dash.[IMG]

Love the leather dash, really adds to the cabin. There sure is a whole lot of red going on there...!

Yes the double stitching is nice. I wasn’t sure about the interior when I saw it in pictures, but in reality it is more brick colour and works well.

Thanks for the link Ed. Not a fan of the Oyster interior I’m afraid. And the spec seems a bit on the low end, small screen, no HK audio etc.
I’m finding that the F32 seems to come with more standard spec than the F30/31 x40i models. Certainly the 2017+ ones I’ve looked at on line.
