Hi Guys, some of you may have read my problem with the electronic steering lock, Well one solution is to fit a ELV Emulator which fools the software into thinking all is fine, so has any one had any experience with these,

    Cheers Rich

The neighbour has a z4, he kept getting abs and steering column faults
He placed an emulator in the passenger side seat
This fools the Ecu’s and the errors disappeared, only to reappear
Ultimately the emulator masks faults, latterly he changed the abs pressure switch though prior to doing did not remove emulator and the fault reappeared
Disconnect emulator and connect as should be read fault, install emulator then reread fault and all was clear so there must be some written program within the can check system.
Latterly he changed the battery and all manner of faults have reappeared, we’re unable to clear
Last time, we lost SRS airbag function when the emulator was installed, that was my cue to leave as it was evident the safety systems were effected.....
I left suggesting a steering column change is required as the sensor is evidently faulty though it does look like quite a task changing.

The emulator for the E89x steering column fault is quite simple I think, it is fitted in place of the steering lock, I’m not sure if you fully remove the lock or just disengage it but it’s connection goes into the emulator instead so the ecu gets the response it wants. Obviously that then means you have no steering lock.

WL wow, thats some experience, i only got the steering lock fault, now is that a column fault or lock fault, But.. it did go away, I cant trust it driving to Gatwick only to find the fault reappear when we get back, hence the emulator. i'm going to remove the lock and try to see if i can establish the issue, Half of me think the dealers just say a new column will fix for the money, wouldn't surprise me after some of the stories i hear, and then just do some coding to to fix a software fault, but thats me.I dont mind having no steering lock, if a theif has gone to the trouble to get in the car and start it (skimmer) a lock wont stop him. As for your neighbour, my sympathies. i'm assuming this emulator is just for the lock fault, if it does come back then further investigation is required, i agree,
Oh my theory... the lock fault happened last week when we went through the coldest few days the car has endured with us, The day it was warmer +5/6 deg, Then it worked, the grease got to thick in the cold lock wouldn't move, when warmer the grease moved..working lock. Just a theory. When i get the lock out and working on the bench i can test it through some temp ranges. Any way i digress...
Back to any one put on in??

Just realised you never answered whether the lock banged off as you rocked the steering wheel?

If you did deactivate the steering lock, and had your car stolen some time in the future, the insurance company may not pay up.
Not something that I would want to risk, personally. YMMV of course.

Sorry about that.. when the car wouldn't start, no amount of turning, banging, kicking would release the lock. When i went to it after a few days , when the wheel image withside to side arrows came up, i gently twisted the wheel and the lock disengaged, since then the lock opens as it should, no errors, icons, nothing.
    Hope thats okay

Big update here, i said before i had no laptop, well i've been working on it for days and dont ask how but i got it to accept a OS on a USB, so i'm up and running, So what are the windows OS software i should be looking at to firstly look at the switch issue and secondly trying to auto open/close the wing mirrors
I've heard of something called EDIABAS, is this any good, the best. some advice here would be great, especially where to get it from.

    Thanks

    Rich

EDIABAS is basically the interface BMW use to talk to the car, INPA, NCSExpert, DIS, etc all run on top of it.

NCSExpert is probably the quickest way to get the mirrors coded. Although you need to know what you're doing, best is to read guides/tutorials on how to use it effectively.

Well so much for my smarmy theory, the wiggly wheel icon came back a few days agoso i left it , got my emulator yesterday but realised i couldn't put it on 'cos the lock was engaged! luckily it fixed itself in the evening and on whent the Emulator. Been working fine...untill 10 mins ago when it stranded me at the shops with the Fooking wiggly wheel again, even though the lock was disengaged the car wouldn't start because it.... well you know the rest. Luckily it sprang to life and i got home so what is going on, i read about counters, worn coloumn ( i mean if the column was worn why doesn't i bloddy well say so!) I've got my laptop up and running and had a dcan OBD/usb cable plus DCAN software delivered today, can this fix this ??

    Help...Please

    or i'm buying a Merc
