Anyone know about doors and what best to fit ? Looking at replacing front door and rear garage door, in these times, one can’t go doing the usual perusal so looking for recommendations ?
I had a stable door rock door fitted to my farm house back 4-5yrs ago and really rated it. Was super quality and fitter was great (although presume it’s all a franchise model). can’t speak for longevity since the divorce meant I barely lived there for more than 6months following installation but it was still going strong 2yrs afterwards when I sold the house. Took a fair bit of battering up on the hol where the house was and facing the weather directly.
Thanks I’m waiting for the local Rock door installer to come and measure/price Not that it’ll ultimately come down to price, I’m more focused on product longevity
In a previous life i used to train cops in "Method of Entry" ie forcing entry to premises using various equipment. Both Solidor and Rockdoor had good reputations for security and being "difficult" (but not impossible) to force open ...if you had the right equipment and knew how to operate it ! Both are still endorsed by "Secured by Design". My only comment would be if you upgrade the doors, ensure there are no other easy access points (brick through a window) patio doors without extra locks etc
We bought 2 Rockdoor`s late last year , front and rear , front has dropped on it s hinges twice in last couple of months needing adjusting and bar come off that is like a handle top to bottom . Still waiting for the door being adjusted again expected during covid but not very happy as it cost nearly 5 times the price of the original Pvc door . It looks quality is solid and premium but as ever I must have got a Friday door which they finished just before clocking off so wouldn`t recommend !
Thanks I’m looking at the Solidor online sales bumph and whilst saw it for what it was, I’m inclined to go with one of these, only, it’s apparent that the installation team is one of the locally frowned mainstream suppliers.... Could of swore I had them up last year offering same product at online price + 35% Real life comments say a lot about a product & I understand your misery, hopefully resolved soon I’ve just replaced the handle spring but the door is warped and won’t latch, so best replace!
We always use a local window firm that have been excellent over the years and looked after our rental properties ! Just one of those things as they usually come out the same day if there is a problem . I would steer clear of frowned upon suppliers as you know from other peoples poor experiences what to expect . Plenty of reputable suppliers it is just a case of reviewing their workmanship . Good luck
If Scumbags want to get in they will, when I got burgled they weren't subtle, it was crowbars and sledgehammers, basically get a crowbar in as a wedge and smash the shit out of the door/window to get in/out. Not much will protect you form that kind of attack.... Luckily they had no brain and passed off the goods on CCTV in the local cash converters, didn't notice the UV markers, didn't even wipe the accounts from the laptos or xbox....
I stupidly think we live in a low crime area, though realistically we don’t! Our current locks on doors and windows meet insurance requirements, If they’re coming in, they’re coming in..... I don’t foresee a door stopping them. The door is being replaced due to warping, broken latch most likely from an over zealous child, it’s not uncommon to return to the door being ajar due to child’s departure.. I’m thinking it’s nearly 13year old, so likely served its cost! So looking for something “child proof” if there is such a thing! Likely not, though would make for good advertising if they could guarantee install and latch against a child’s abuse, shame as there so much focus on protecting the hinge side from trapped fingers, soft close drawers & doors, but little by way of soft closing domestic doors that don’t break the latch and or warp after repeated child’s throws! Local Rock door manny coming to measure and price tomorrow, so whilst on the fence between the two, ultimate decision may come down to....... the wife! Though do like others views, I asked several friends in the trade and got the universal response of not knowing anyone reliable even though we know several fitters, squint line Ian, wobbly Bob & leaky Fin!
Hi, I fit doors (and windows) for a living. I don't work for a company. All my own work. As for your two door options, Rock Door or Solidor....... Either are ok. But, if I could give you a piece of invaluable advice, please research installers. Ask for recommendations locally. Not just their fitting skills, but also if they were willing to come back out to carry out remedial works? Generally speaking, if the door is fitted well, you shouldn't have any problems. If you have a product failure, will your chosen installers address it?
Thanks I was let down by the Rock Door Man We ended up going with a friend of the wife’s friend (I think that’s right) We got the door on his recommendation c/w manufacturers warranty though also got the commitment should anything go wrong just call So far & with many child slams, so good, with the front door, the garage door is taking constant adjustment though we did scrimp and had fitted a Upvc door, easy enough to adjust, just a pest! Part of me wishes I’d fitted a composite door their also! Though ultimately it’s wind and and water tight
