    I'm back!
After much deliberation we decided to keep Gen's Polo and get a second cheap-but-good car for holidays and long journeys etc.
It's a late 2001 530d SE with pretty much immaculate leather interior, and climate all working.
All for well under £1000. I bought it from a trusted acquaintance so I know it's a good 'un. It could do with new shocks (pretty much everthing else has been replaced) and the EGR valve needs cleaning but I'm OK with that.

Yes, very good choose, I owned four of them. Just check the rear footwells, I bet the carpet is wet as you seem to have a lot of condensation on the windows. This is a standard problem with them and only requires the membrane behind the door cards being resealed.

It's not condensation, there was a hard frost this morning when I took the photos!

I agree -nice looking motor, looks well cared for too - not star ship mileage I trust? I know its a diesel, but various bits still wear out as the miles accumulate. The E39's are good solid cars, the two I had were both solid and rust free, which is more than you can say of many other cars of that age. Cleaning the EGR valve is no big deal really, even a new one isn't too expensive - as long as you don't buy it from a main dealer!! I assume the turbo is in good fettle...…?

    Good luck with it!

160K miles, so getting on a bit but not starship.
He gave me a box of bits, one of which is a spare EGR valve (y)

Lovely - if it's an auto make sure you have the swirl flaps removed - the plastic breaks and ingests into the engine causing serious failure. Manuals did not have them.

It's had the swirl flaps removed. The previous owner, an enthusiast friend of mine, says it's the first thing he did since that's what killed his last one!

Lovely car! Looks in great nick. (y)

Looking forward to see photos of its interior.

Will you keep the grille black?

Make no mistake, it's got one or two battle scars, which I plan to get sorted.

I haven't decided about the grille yet. It looks like previous owner took a standard chrome one and sprayed it black, which always seems to end up flaking off. So either way I think I will have to buy a new one.

One of the best cars BMW ever made, or will ever make. Congratulations and best wishes with it.
