Comments in another thread, :) regarding the need to upgrade to something bigger when we have a family, got me thinking.

When I was young, having a child (or two) didn't make much difference to what we drove. We just adapted to fitting everything in.

I'm aware of families, (two adults & two children), coping with the original Mini. Holidays, the lot, all from a Mini.

When we had our son, we had a Cortina Mk2 GT '2-door'. Never thought of changing the car, to get all the baby kit in, carry cot, pram, baby seat, etc. All with a 2-door and conventional boot. Plus we went camping with all the kit. Pushchair, tent, stove, etc. No trailer, no roof rack.

I just remember the time when we had an 'Austin 10' as I was growing up. We'd have four adults and three small children in it! I know we didn't have the safety we all benefit from today, but we travelled around like that, two families in the Austin, many times.

    How did we manage?

What are your stories or experiences?

A small world. My parents first car was also an Austin 10, green and black immaculate paint. Never had more than 5 in it, 2 adults and 3 kids. 30mph was comfortable, anything faster and it swayed and weaved all over the place. Frightened the life out of me.

I for one don’t get the obsession with SUVs - often FWD at that - and usually bought by people who have just had a first child .

Just like @Peter . Started with a VX Viva HB 3-door in dark blue

packed a lot of stuff in, holidayed etc with stuff for child #1 then moved it on when rust killed it and bought a Cortina Mk3 from my ex's uncle - identical to this....

Then children 2 & 3 arrived together, so 3 x car seats across the rear, again no roof rack but every available space in the boot & interior was packed to the gunwales. Ran that moved on for a Rover SD1 which was written off in a smash [not my fault]. Then a Granada like so...

    upload_2020-6-20_16-36-19.jpeg

Sold it and got a VW Carlton...

And so it progressed......as Peter says, with very few of today's creature comforts or technologies but they were [mostly] happy days. :D but do I miss the constant routine maintenance, the oiling & greasing etc.....? An emphatic NO!!

As a kid my dad has a Morris ital
Mrj579w god knows why I remember the reg I just do lol. we went to Wales all squashed with holiday gear in it many times. They were the good old days making memories. Of which I was to do with my family in future years to come.

then he got a white montego :( which did its job but nothing to scream about tbh.

as for us my first was a fiat uno mk2 turbo
    Then a mk2 golf gti

we never seemed to struggle in every day life with two kids
As for holidays in Wales it was a tight road trip with bedding on the back seats and kids squashed moaning all the way

Old Man had a Hillman Hunter, we went to Cornwall in it from Yorkshire ,also taking my Grandparents

So 4 adults and 2 x under 10 boys in the car, always remember it was 401 miles from home to the place we stayed and it took at least 12 hours !

I had one too, used to race RS2000's which was fine until you came to a corner, taught me how to apply opposite lock and drift....mostly at pretty slow speeds, in the ice it was downright lethal....mine also had a nasty habit of switching the lights off as you were driving along, usual just before a sharp bend.....was a bit disconcerting to say the least as everything went black....don't miss that !!!

This wasn’t mine, but it’s the same colour. SCT591N

It had torsion beam front suspension with lever arm shocks that I converted to telescopic...

Morris Marina and Ital... don't swear on the forum.

You do know the front suspension was virtually the same as the old Morris Minor and 1000.

Had to work on a few of the Marina models in my time in the trade, TC Coupe was the best of the bunch, 1800 B-series Twin Carb was pretty sound.

Anyone have the gearbox that wouldn't change gear, once it got warm?

I once saw an indicated 120mph in 4th gear on a patch of ice. The silly things you do when you are young...

    I also fitted a Piper HR 270 camshaft and 1 3/4” SUs off a TR7....,

When I first read it I was like Vauxhall lotus Carlton .... flipping heck, he’s done well.. then I realised it was a normal Carlton... then I sW the Vw.. even when I replied I was thinking. ‘ have I got that right?’ And then subsequently goggled Carltons, to confirm my thoughts...
Amazing how you can doubt yourself
