There's a thread on a different BMW forum about this. The summary is that removing the wing mirror is relatively straightforward and it could be rubbed down and repainted.

When you find out the price of a replacement wing mirror you'll probably consider the repainting idea....

thanks for responding Jason. I think I've found a replacement (here) but am not 100% sure its the correct one. The code numbers on the bottom all seem to be the same, but in the Ebay add it only says their;s is compatible with the 520d. I wasnt aware that there was any differences. Is there any way I can be sure before ponying up?

Go to realoem.com put in your chassis number and find the BMW part number. Then click on the part number to see which other models use the same part.

very easy to do. I change mine once.
Dont have complete pics , but here are some.

Undo those 3 Torx screws and it will come away from the door.

Can not recall if the connectors to the loom are on the inside of the door trim, you may need to feed these two wires through the but I don't think so. So the replacement should come with wires coming out of it, and a plug on the end. I changed to M5 mirrors so my other pics are of them.

Oh, Adies link shows it. - prob i should have followed the link first.

Thanks again Jason. That's a very useful site! I put in my details and got this list. It shows a number of exterior mirror assemblies and when clicking through them, there was this one that was accurately identified (For vehicle with and w/o Memory, For vehicles with M Sports package or High gloss shadow line). I have no idea if my car has a high gloss shadow line or not (I don't know the original spec of the car :( ), but its definitely an M spec car. Looking down the list of choices though, all of them show options for comfort seat with memory. My seats are electrically operated, but there's no memory function. Am I misunderstanding the list?

    Thanks for your help

If you enter the last 7 digits of your VIN here you'll get the full, original build spec for your car [scroll through the page, ignoring the ads ]

Slim boy fat has covered the VIN decoder.

Comfort seats are pretty special and were an expensive option - loads of adjustment buttons and memory buttons. So if you don't have memory buttons on the side of seat then you don't have comfort seats.

Thanks guys :) So I can see that I definitely dont have comfort seats, therefore from this list, it looks this is the one I'm looking for :D At least now I know exactly what I'm looking for whilst I scour ebay and the breakers.

Try Quarry Spares or FABDirect, both specialist BMW breakers. (y)

If you can, find some replica M5 mirrors, like i did. Assuming your into that, it looks a lot better.
When i part exchanged my car, I swapped the old ones back and resold them on ebay and more or less covered the original cost.
