Mrs P and I had started discussing what we planned to do in 2018, it was late January, and every day was dark, cold and miserable. The conversation turned to a 2 seater mid-engined sports car, preferably a convertible . It would be used on weekends and driving trips around the English countryside, possibly the near continent. Unbeknown to me, we had both secretly wanted that type of vehicle, but never discussed it. We have been Mr & Mrs sensible over our 28 years of marriage, especially with car selection. Our history consists of Fords, Vauxhalls, Merc's and inevitably BMW's. There were a couple of coupes in early years, but once the baby's arrived, it was 4 door-ville all the way. The Budget Let's see what £4k buys us? ... A Mazda MX5? – Mrs P wasn’t amused. Okay let's see what £5-£6k buys us – some older Z4’s and SLK’s, and Boxsters. I would twist the tablet around and back would come appreciative nods at those. Nothing particularly quick, but hey who needs power when the sun is shining and out for a cruise. Then it happened!!! We started looking at Porsches driving around and instantly reached agreement that a Boxster is wanted, nay needed in our lives! None of the extended family had one, and if you are going to make a noise, then make it a big one! The budget jumped to £10k – ok this is starting to get serious – let’s sit on the idea for a week or two, and see if we still fancy that weekend toy. I continued to research the topic , outside the gaze of Mrs P. She has this habit of dismissing an idea, and then comes back to the same suggestion in agreement (28 years of marriage and I still can’t figure her out). The search The 2002-2005 Boxsters were excluded almost immediately on the grounds of the Intermediate shaft bearing (IMS). Cars from 2006-2009 were codenamed the 987 .1 (1st generation). We had a look at a few, mostly the 2.7 litre version, but nothing peeked our attention. We knew we liked them though. I joined a few Porsche forums (BMWLAND has been invaluable with my F25 X3 30d), in the hope of doing something similar and learning about the marque. Most said try and get into a 987 .2 (2nd generation), and if by chance there was one for sale near my in laws – we hastily made up a story and disappeared like naughty children for an hour. The interior was lovely. It wasn’t the car for us, but the 987 .2 had us smitten …. (to be continued)
The budget – if we want a 987 .2 then close to £20k is where we need to be. Why don’t you have the X3 and I can get the train into work ( I was finding my drives into London increasingly frustrating), which helps my ever expanding waistline reduce somewhat. Mrs P liked that idea over buying her a fairly new BMW X1. WE would sell her Mercedes C Class to partly fund the Porsche. Many weeks passed … I looked and looked, and saw and drove , but nothing was of the quality, price and spec we wanted …. But then I noticed an advert for a car that hadn’t arrived yet. No pictures and it wasn’t on auto trader or pistonheads. The specification was everything and more I could have wished for … Boxster 987 3.4S (DFI Engine Generation II) PDK transmission. A phone call was made , further details given, and I would be the first to view once it arrived. The pictures appeared on their website 3 days later, followed by a phone call inviting us to come and view the vehicle in the morning. It would be a understatement to say we were thrilled, excited and yet nervous having found our perfect example. It wasn’t a Boxster, it was a Boxster S with Porsche DoppelKupplung (PDK) !!! The bodywork was near perfect as was the dealer’s presentation and knowledge. A deal was struck. WE OWNED IT !!!! Time for the pictures ….
The Monday after collection weekend was taken off work, the weather was warm and sunny so we took full advantage, and ventured down to Windsor for some lunch and a stroll along the Thames ..
That is a seriously nice car, I love colour - not the everyday - and the wheels top it off. Quality pics btw. Enjoy.
Congratulations. That does look awfully nice. I wish you big fun with it. Within the bounds of what is sane, life is not a rehearsal and if you can possibly tick all the boxes, you should. Well done.
Having just come from a 987.1 Cayman, I hope you have as much fun in yours as I did in mine. They're excellent cars and draw lots of admiring glances, especially ones as pretty as yours.
