Although I've done many oil changes in the past, I've never bothered with the BMW. So this weekend for the first time I changed the oil in my 2011 330d N57. And hit a snag.

Before going any further, the filter cover takes a 36mm socket, just to differentiate it from the earlier types, and perhaps the later ones.

The filter kit I purchased (genuine BMM), besides the filter and drain plug washer, contained two "O" rings. I say o-ring, but in section only one was a true o-ring. The other had an elongated profile.

When it came to replacing the o-rings I could only find one o-ring in the filter holder, which was the elongated one, the other "standard" o-ring I couldn't find. I'm guessing/hoping that two different rings were supplied because there are two different covers.

I wouldn't be bothered but there is a slight weep between the filter cover and filter holder. The cover was torqued to the recommended 25nm, so I don't think that is the problem. Any ideas appreciated.

Unfortunately cant' be of much help as i'm useless in a engine bay lol.

@Cotswold BMW Maybe Ed car verify that 2 o-rings are normally in the box before you get on your hands and knees in the garage and start looking for it ? :)

Did you change the big "O"ring on the filter housing and did you make sure that it went in the correct grove in-between the threads.
Very easy to put it to the top of the housing and not always get a leak but when you do get one it will start slowly and get worse.

I'm assuming it was oil filter 11427788460 ? Which should contain 1x rubber ring for the filter housing lid and 1 copper washer for the sump plug.

The tip of the filter housing lid does have 2 much smaller O rings but neither come with the filter. I've never changed them and never had a problem, but I know some people like to buy them for peace of mind
    11427788458 & 11427788459 £4.46 for both

Think your referring to the wee washer / oring .......

Garage terminology - Wee washers / oring
Adjective - hold in left hand, at arms length, oscillate arm in sharp upwards motion and shout wee!
Surprisingly thereafter all parts are fitted!

I’ve only changed the upper oring (3) in the cap, can be troublesome to remove and only fits one way

Is the said o ring item (4)?

The other o ring, number 6 in the picture goes around the filter housing at the bottom of the threaded section

    Many thanks for the replies.
Ed, the kit was part #11427808443. two o-rings, plus a washer.
The cap is different to the one you pictured Ed, and probably the same as the one srnbrtsn pictured.

    O-ring 3 in the diagram I replaced.

    O-ring 6 I couldn't find, but I'll have a look where markyboyt suggested

Oh I see, yes the 11427808443 comes with 2 and a washer. The one seal is for the lid and the other goes on the filter housing (y)

I’m more than sure it’s for the filter packages as they are shared between engines

The N57, having the flat o ring as fitted
The M57, having the conventional o ring that should be discarded

There will be a difference in caps necessitating the different o rings

However that’s only my assumption, having fitted both o ring styles previously.......
    As mentioned, Wee Oring :worship:
