Well seeing as the original thread is gone this gives me an excuse to tell the world about the M140i all over again and update my thoughts and feeling on the car but first let's have a picture outside Cotswold Cheltenham...

The car was pretty much new at this point and apart from the black decals on the side, it was standard. So first impressions of the car were brilliant, 340hp in such a little car is quite staggering and the acceleration is breathtaking. However the main negative I found with the car is that the handling is not upto scratch with the performance, I couldn't really feel confident in the handling at all and kept a deathgrip on the steering wheel at all times and I guess the runflats only add to this issue. So it appears I am not alone in thinking this and after scouring another site dedicated to these cars, a lot of owners have had their lowered slightly and also added wheel spacers to improve it so I thought "what the hell", it's a cheap modification and although modifying is not really my thing I thought I'd give it a go as I will have this car for some time. So here it is after installation time:

First impressions were very positive, it really has made a big difference in the handling and improved my confidence in driving it. It's not perfect but better anyway and if anything it does improve the looks (maybe subjectively).

The only issue I've really had with the car is the exhaust rattle which is quite common on these, occurring from anything between 20 miles and 8000 miles (some have had it the same day as new pick up). Now for those who are not aware of this issue, there is a butterfly valve in the left tailpipe that rattles on start-up, it sounds like a baked bean tin full of stones and is extremely embarrassing on such a new car. After a couple of months of battling with BMW customer services and financial services they agreed to replace the exhaust with an M Performance version without the valve. Many owners have been successful in obtaining these exhausts as a fix but I can tell you it was a frustrating process but although I wasn't really aiming for an upgrade, more just a fix (no fix available currently), I am happy with the resolution. You can see the chrome tailpipe below:

So overall it's a great little car, certainly a bargain for something so quick, if I was being fussy I think it could do with a little extra in the mid-range but certainly not in the low range as it really struggles to put the power down in any conditions other than bone dry and warm. I'm planning on a trip to the Nurburgring in May to really stretch it out and see what it can do within my limits and I'm taking another forum member @The Governor for company too but as a passenger as he's not allowed to take his M140i there because his wife says so.

Unfortunately after that or at some point this year it will be time to say goodbye as it's proving impractical with two kids and I can't handle the wifes moaning about it anymore so as she wears the trousers I will be replacing it with another estate. She wants an SUV but I think a fast Touring or Avant will be a good compromise.

Thanks for this - the youth side of me really fancies a M135/140 M235/240 but have also heard of issues with putting the power down and the ride being a little choppy. Autocar have done a couple of articles on Birds garage conversion having sent their M135i to them for new shocks and an LSD. Transforms the cars by all accounts into everything it should have been!

Have fun on the track later this year.

Looks great, shame it is going though.

Get an M5 Touring like I did, ticks all the boxes for speed and practicality with children :)

I absolutely love the M5 touring, that would be an absolute weapon but I can't see the wife going for that though.

I was thinking about the S4 Avant but after a discussion last night we may well go for the 340i touring. She's never forgiven me for trading in our last touring for the M140i but my only issue is i wanted AWD and the 340i doesnt come with x drive. I know the 335d is also a powerful beast but I kind of wanted to stick with a petrol and the great noise the IL6 makes. First world problems eh?

You never know. You could run it past her or do what I did and buy it when she is out of the country and can't stop you. Sometimes it's easier to seek forgiveness rather than permission :)

The new X3 looks stunning inside, I looked at one last week with the biggest panoramic roof I've ever seen. With the 4.0i engine I would think that would be something very special.

Good shout - the 3.0 litre turbo now kicks out 360bhp! I sat in an 3.0d M Sport at the weekend and it was a pleasant place to be.

I like that mantra. Only thing is it could work the other way around too... ;)

    EDIT
As in: Sometimes it's easier to seek permission than forgiveness. :)

    Trust me it isn't.

Many years ago I treated myself to a new W124 300TE without asking.

Let's just say I won't be doing that again !

    Kindest Regards
    Carl.

If I had floated the idea of an additional car the answer would have been 'No'

Buying it when my wife was abroad meant she was a bit cross but could do nothing about it.

I was even brave enough to collect her from the airport in it :)

    cheers

    360bhp!!!
That must be seriously quick, as my 3.0d pumps our 258bhp and is pretty rapid

:LOL::LOL::LOL: We don't really come out of your post looking like a couple of players mate !!!

Interesting thoughts a few months in, I think you're not completely happy with the MPE?

I think the M140 is a decent car, but it's definitely not a keeper, I'm not sure what I'll go for next time around yet, I doubt I'll go the full 4 years PCP though.

Personally from a purely technical point of view it's a very capable car, it can drink fuel if you want ti to, but can be surprisingly frugal if you're on a run, but is still quick. I also like the Q=Car looks, I've had quite a few "that's ncie comments" butt only when we start talking do people really know what it is.

A couple of things I don't like, the cold start, as I don't have the mental age of 12, having the exhaust announce I'm leaving home at 0645 to all my sleeping neighbours or that I'm leaving the office on a shady early dart is not ideal, if I was keeping it I would definitely code that out.

The online community that surrounds the 140 is incredibly juvenile, it's all straight pipes and decats, it isn't only because I am OLD, I've always felt the best cars don't need to make loads of noise to be great to drive or quick, in fact sometimes you can sound like a total bell end if you accelerate from the lights and your car is doing it's best to sound like an F1 car.

As you say, probably the biggest issue is the skittish handling, I'd be interested what this would be like in X-Drive form, it is VERY easy to spin the wheels.

Maybe next time I'll go for a slightly more civilised 340 :)

Mind you, it'll be a chuckle around the 'ring!
