the E46 passed again with no advisories (of course)

It’s not been a pain free year as it did need a clutch and a front calliper earlier in the year .... but still going well.

It’s got potential to keep going as long as the turbo keeps its stuff together, I’ve now put 20K miles on it and since I’ve had it it returns a consistent 55mpg which isn’t bad for a 160K car.

It gives a certain sense of satisfaction to get that kind of mileage out of a car. I put 120k on my previous Golf GTi, but passed it on to my son-in-law over 3 years ago. So I guess it must be over 150k by now. Unfortunately, it now looks it's age 2002, but when I handed it over, it was immaculate. It's also had a couple of fairly minor bumps. So I try not to look at it too closely when I visit them. :(

Yes I can understand that but he’s using it as a working vehicle so it’s testimony to your previous maintenance and care that it’s still running and reliable, good news. I call mine the dog van yet when I cleaned it for it’s test it still looks spot on inside and out

I forgot that I had to do front control arm bushes and drop links as well this year, another fifty quid. It’s not been as cheap to run as some cars, all the “common” faults have happened and been fixed but I do it all myself so it’s only parts really.

I do a 250 mile round trip every week and get out of the car every time thinking that was comfy and quick so hopefully it will keep going, last week I parked in a close by McDonalds car park, no less than 6 e46 in adjacent bays. I presume it was an owners club as they were all M’s and compacts etc, but I was near the end of a horrible 17 hour trip so I just flipped the seat back and covered myself in a coat and slept for an hour. I thought such days were over when I retired.

Fundamentally it’s a solid platform and only stuff like running gear and high wear bits like the turbo should need replacement so big mileages shouldn’t be a problem, there was a six cylinder at the auction last week in an x5 with 260K on it, sounded fine. Edit it was so cheap I nearly had it for a winter field van .

Mines in for an airbag recall this week so it will be funny to see how much add on business they will try for.

Great stuff Paul, I wish you many more miles. I loved my E46 but the salty roads up here were not kind to the wheel arches and rust had started in her 6th year. To my eyes, the E46 has a timeless look in a way that neither the E36 nor the E90 have achieved.

    Douglas :)

Well my car went in today for its airbag recall, pleasant experience nice coffee and good Wi-Fi. Whole thing only took an hour or so.

Of course at the end of the job I got the mandatory inspection report for the vehicle, I’d have been disappointed if they hadn’t picked up the weeping diff seal which I will do if it gets any worse but I was also told that one of the rear springs was broken.

I was quite surprised at this as the new HD strings where a a nusance to fit only a couple of months ago and of course they were not broken 75 miles previously when the MOT was carried out.

Even more remarkable is that when I just lifted it up and looked at it just now the spring has magically found the broken bit and seamlessly welded it back onto the end all by itself

Good try 3 out of 10 for effort

Simply Amazing, metal fusion always amazes me!
Moreso when the broken bit ordinarily falls out and punctures someone’s tyre....
    Astounding in this case!

It's a bit like the inspection carried out by my dealer last month. They gave me the reassuring news that my front tyres had gained an extra 2 mm of tread while in the workshop. I take it in for a service in a couple of weeks and I'm hoping that the tyres will gain another couple of mm. On that basis, I should never need to buy tyres for an awfully long time.

Thankfully I no longer need to worry about my leaking diff seal as I’ve just received this email from BMW. Apparently I have won a small amount of money and a car.

Here is an extract from the e-mail, it’s lucky that it got through my junk mail filter otherwise I may have missed out!
