    Hi Folks,

I have two spare keys (plus the metal blade) and picked up the spare by accident only to find it won't unlock the car. I tried the spare and that's a dud too.

Is there a sync procedure (I did this when I had the E39) or is it a dealer visit to programme them?

    TIA

    Rob

Hold it up to the key symbol on the steering column. That should sync the two (y)

Thanks, do you hold all three or do this one fob at a time and how long for?

Best to do this one fob at a time and for no more than a minute. That should sync up the keys.

    Many thanks

@Cotswold BMW i assume the procedure is different for the various series/models

This appears to be the procedure to sync the key on mine:

First generation keys were ignition on, ignition off, press and hold 3 times
Second generation were just plug into the slot
Third generation hold up to the steering column

I've never had to press anything on the dash :)

Okay, I tried both normal fobs and then checked their batteries. One was flat so put a new one in (button cell type CR2032). The other was good. Tried again, went through the onboard manual and it still won't recognise the fobs.

Thankfully, the display fob works so at least I have a spare.

    What am I doing wrong?

If you hold it to the key point on the column and press the start button does it turn on the ignition?
Is it possible the keys have been blocked via diagnosis at all?
Some of the emergency coils need the key to be held in a very particular spot so if it doesn’t work move it around a bit. If it’s not detected your dash will say so, if I remember rightly if the key is blocked it will show a different symbol.
