Hey guys, haven't been on here for quite some time, but i am thinking of coming back to the BMW fold.....

Going to view a 550i tomorrow, 2011 reg, 43k miles, FSH, well specced. What are the known things to look out for? Is the 550i reliable, or should i run away?

Sorry, been doing some searching and the advice is rather sparse, and it seems very much 50/50 between good and bad. The car looks amazing, i don't do a huge amount of miles a year now, so i'm thinking it's time to treat myself to a decent engine. :)

Thanks in advance for any advice

Well that doesn't make for good reading :( I'll still go and have a look at it, but from the looks of those posts, it's not worth spending 15k on a car that will cost that again to repair.....

I had an E60 550i for a year and absolutely loved it. It was a barnstormer of a car but also felt somewhat fragile compared with my previous 535d. It was wonderfully refined but being naturally aspirated, took a while to wind up to get the best performance, by which time I was well above the national limits.

I imagine the 4.4 turbo in the F10 to be a lot easier to pootle in and I’ve considered an F10 a few times. Nearly paid a deposit on one a few years back only to find out it didn’t have xenons of all things!!!!!

I love a V8 and would highly recommend. But I’d also be going for the BMW AUC warranty too if I were taking the leap.

Thank you :) I have had a quote for the comprehensive warranty, which after reading all the links, would be a definite purchase, it's cheaper to pay the years warranty than have one of these issues appear. I haven't been in an F10 yet hence the desire to still go and look and see what they are like, the only thing this one doesn't have that i would have liked is HUD, it has pretty much everything else.

Jeez, you have been lying low :D

Is this car at a Authorised Dealership, or an independent garage/trader? Is the Warranty quote you're, received the BMW one? 3rd Party warranties are generally not worth the paper they're written on.

Do have a link to it?

It's a rare engine in the F10 - they also put it in the 6 and 7 series and there are a few of those around.

Is a 535i not quick enough for you? It's a known quantity to both dealers and owners.

Lovely car - like the combination of black leather and wood, nice spec too - if you keep up the BMW warranty you'll be fine...

Bloomin rare things. I have only seen three on the road. Looks lovely though and worth looking at if you have the time. Food for thought though, if you can stretch your budget a bit you can get in to an early M5.

Rare car indeed! A little surprised it hasn't got the full black panel display, Was a low cost option, nothing compared to the cost of a 550i.

Just to add another angle. The pre-LCI 550i wasn’t actually that much quicker than the 535i and the 535d. The LCI, 550i had around another 50hp added, which made it around 4.6 seconds to 62mph, IIRC

Also, with the weight of the V8 up front and without the M5’s suspension, it might handle worse than the smaller engined cars, so definitely have a long test drive.

Thanks guys, I think it’s worth a look, test drive and see how it feels :) the black panel was only would like list, not a necessity, but I’ll see how it looks

The 550i looks like an uber cool/rare car, can’t say I’ve ever seen one in the steel. Depends what you want from the car, speed and reliability the 535i/d could be a winner, but these won’t have the tingle that a V8 would bring.
Cast iron warranty and hammer down the purchase price.....

A lot of the 550i s that I have seen for sale haven’t had the sport auto transmission either. Option code 2TB I think.

    Definitely worth a test drive.

I know when I was looking to get an E39 530d Touring, the 540i on the forecourt was worth a test drive. The rest is history, as they say. Scratched the V8 itch.

F10/11, I was drawn to the 535i, made more sense for my typical driving. N55 engine was getting good reviews for efficiency and proving pretty reliable in other models. Saying that, a 550i touring would be a superb machine.:)

I noted that as well, as the 550i would also be on my search list, when I was looking to get an F10/11. Seemed to be some odd builds, often missing the obvious options we'd expect on a high end model.

Well, I had a look at it, got a short test drive, which I wasn’t overly happy with. They sell cars from their house, which isn’t an issue, but I feel for that money I would prefer a dealership purchase. Car was stunning, but due to not very long test drive, I didn’t get chance to test everything I wanted (if I decide to buy I will test again before doing so). Broken rear light, and needs a service in just over a month, so I’ve gone away to think about it.
For the time I was driving it, it felt very smooth, definitely confirmed I want an F10, just finding the right one, or deciding if this is the right one.

if any one sees a well specced low mileage 550i Let me know :beers:

Apparently they only sold about 20 a year, against around 120 535i’s so Petrols are pretty rare.
