It also seems to be a constant live power output. Turned the engine off and closed the glove box and the phone is still charging. Hmmm. Wonder if this could work as a feed for the unit as the parking mode, or would this be a constant draw on the battery of the car.

    The manual would suggest not.

It’s possible this is a switched feed and the system will power down the socket after circa 16mins
I’d be inclined to check/test by leaving the phone charging with the lead connected and phone on the dash, lock the doors and come back to it after circa 20mins
With full appreciation to separation anxiety of not having phone on person having to be overcome.....

Haha. A very good point. Maybe use the works phone instead.

In the manual it states there is a power socket under the glove box on the left hand side. There isn’t on mine, however, there is a blanking plate. When pulled out it seems there is the wiring for something.

Maybe factory wiring for the socket. Need to test to see if this is a switched live as are the other two cig sockets.

After a bit of searching that seems to be a fibre optic diagnostic sensor. So probably not a good idea to try and patch into it!

    Ha
No I’d be putting that back in place
There may be an outlet for A N other cigarette lighter as some models were specced to include
(Brain fart, it may have been euro style LHD - ignore )

Yes definitely don’t try and patch into the MOST fibre optics lol, no mending them with a soldering iron. if you power it off the glovebox usb it will throw up dtc’s as it’s only designed to be used for map updates.
As mentioned earlier I’d just have the glovebox out, takes 5 minutes.

First decent journey in the car since fitting the Garmin, noticed that the speed camera alert is working, and accurate so far.
Also a proximity/crash alert sensor, turned that off as it was doing my head in.

My wife has the 65 and most things are turned on, I’ve managed to convince her to turn off the collision warning off as if she was driving I’d get out of the car on edge and needing a strong coffee but she still has things like traffic moving alert on, worst is the voice activation. It just randomly saves pictures and videos when you haven’t said the commands, if it was mine I’d have it all turned off lol.

A few days after fitting my Viofo A119 dash cam, I played around - downloading random videos onto the computer. Simple, effective and very high resolution. But after a week, I forgot about it. I don't want to hear it or see it, which I can't. But I know that it's there keeping a record, just in case. I really must get around to formatting the card if I remember (recommended very 2 months). So like @markyboyt, I would have everything turned off.

No update on this recently. Work, DIY and general life getting in the way.
The unit is working great on the cigarette adaptor, volume turned down so I don't get the speed camera/traffic light bleeps every few minutes.

Still plan to install the hardwire cable, will keep trying until I manage to get it to work!

Had a few mins today so had another look. Took the glove box out, easier than I thought.

Using the cigarette lighter fuse, number eight I think, I added the fuse splitter. Turning the car back on it seems the cig lighter wasn’t working, no power. So suspect a problem with the splitter, I refitted the same fuse into the splitter and still no power. Removed and replaced the fuse into the box and worked again.
    So probably dodgy cables.

Still haven’t ordered a multi meter.....but given the current style of affairs I may be forgiven.

A multimeter is not a lot of money. I would certainly buy one to do the job - they are invaluable for many DIY jobs. Failing that, you can always make a simple circuit tester with a length of wire, a 12 v bulb and holder with a couple of crocodile clips.

I tried to use a basic circuit tester today, mini-screwdriver with a fuse bulb in, croc clip on a wire at the other end. Couldn’t seem to get anything from it. Maybe the Earth I’m trying to use isn’t an actual earth, the large hex nut to the right of the fuse box.

Will have another look very soon. Not going to be going out anytime soon!

My son in law works for British Gas, he has a multimeter. He can tell me how to use it, as long as he is 2.5m away at the time....

When you say "basic circuit tester" are you referring to a proprietary tester or home botch? If it's a proprietary mains tester they usually cover 200 to 1000VAC. Car is 12v so no show, so to speak.

As suggested, buy a multimeter. Anything from £15 to thousands. The one I use cost about £100 (iso-tech) , had it for over 10 years. It replaced a RadioShack multimeter (big impressive black box) which I purchased from Tandy at least 40 years ago, and is still going strong in the hands of my son. The more you enjoy playing with electrics the more you'll get from a miltimeter. And it may stop something your doing coming as a shock. :-D

I tried to use this one:

Sounds like this isn’t the right tool for the job.
I will order a multimeter, imagine I will find a need for it further down the line.

Forgive my naivety on this score. Give me a spanner or socket and I’m happy to take a car apart! Vehicle electrics scare me a wee bit, hence the lack of confidence on this job.

Electrics.... I’d love to say are easy, however I realistically believe they are only easy to cock up!
They require a systematic approach and an understanding,
    Re your test light rig
The systematic approach would be, arch it across the battery terminals, this ensures you can identify the illumination...
I mention this as the glow from the light strip is weak..

The same approach whilst very basic, exists for voltmeter (or multimeter) first and foremost find a reference, I use a 0-1000v fluke meter, I borrowed from work (that I really must remember to return) I also have a cheaper model that’s my go to, oddly enough this was an old works unit too. regardless, due to operational range I have to find reference and define range...
Thereafter perform the zero, then set to work....

I’d offer to send my meter, if the Post service was reliable though, it’s when you don’t think you have a use, is when you need it (only today I was in sockets due to end of world Xbox emergency, another story)

ps, this install is taking longer the proposed lockdown!

I know...I know....people have rebuilt engines in the time I've been faffing with this "simple" job. In my defence I just don't want to fry the car's electrics....

Thanks for the offer, really kind indeed. Mr/Mrs Amazon will be delivering one to me tomorrow, then I will be on YouTube looking at how to set and use the new tool. Once I've got the vaguest idea I will be testing those connections! Determined to get this simple job done soon, well, before we are allowed to actually go out and drive around at the very least.

To be fair, an Xbox emergency is pretty urgent given the current state of play!
