    Good Afternoon Guys,

So unfortunately I have a couple issues with my 2011 BMW 1 Series Coupe (E82), I feel that these issues may just be generic BMW issues of that time line, but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

This is my first post on here so please forgive me for any mistakes aha.

    Thanks!

    Issue 1
Firstly the BC (Board Computer) will not work unless the steering wheel put in the highest position and pulled out the furthest point, which led me too believe that there could be a loose connection in the dash somewhere.

Sometimes it works intermittently, however the strange part is, when the steering wheel is not in ‘the highest position and pulled out the furthest point’ (which is when it works) it will constantly cycles itself through the settings while I am driving ?? i.e.:

    - Changing Date & Time

    - Resetting Services

    - Changing Indicator Settings

    - Oil Check

    e.t.c

Which as you can imagine is extremely annoying, especially when you are on the motorway doing 70MPH and trying to use the cruise control and you can’t see the exact digit as your BC (Board Computer) is cycling itself to check your oil e.t.c

Even worse so, I can’t even check to see how many miles left I have or my MPG while driving.

On top of that it’s just a constant distraction while driving.

    Issue 2
The second issue is that the electric wing mirror on the left side was recently booted off outside a pub (god help me), ever since then it has never been right, I have checked the connection and if anything is coming through and all seems well.

However I am unable to operate the movement of the mirror AND the mirror does not close when I press the button to bring them in (only the right works).

Do they operate on the same fuse or separate as I have checked the fuse and it seems fine as the right wing mirror works?

While I’m here, can I also ask how to get the wing mirror function of lowering down when the reverse gear is selected?

    Issue 3
Not really an issue more of a question but I have on exclamation mark image on my dash screen between my current and overall mileage similar to this image:

    https://external-preview.redd.it/O7...bp&s=200a06f352a377d359e0d4d46a8e51b86203416d

I understand that; “The car displays this every time something is out of the ordinary or something is broken. This can range from low tire pressure, DTC off, broken lamp, service required, low on fuel, etc. ... But going by the image, it even has the fuel reserve icon there, saying you have about 54 miles left on that tank.”

However I just wanted to ask how I would go about checking what the fault is ?

Any recommendations on what I can do for these issues?

    Please Help!

    Cheers!

    Kind Regards,

    Daniel K

Hi Daniel, welcome to the forum :)

    Issue 1
Sounds like a bad connection somewhere if the OBC (On board computer) is cycling through the settings while driving, I would suspect either the OBC switch or the slip ring on the steering column.

    Issue 2
Did you replace the mirror or refit the existing one? I would think if the mirror glass isn't moving with the controls and will also not fold in then there's obviously a break in the wiring somewhere. The passenger mirror dip in reverse function can be coded in, but you'd probably need to find someone to do it.

    Issue 3
The exclamation mark is to indicate that a Check Control message is there, this can be for the reasons you give, for me it's usually because the car is low on fuel. You can check via idrive (if you have it) or via the OBC - which might be difficult if it's playing up!

    Thank you @bishbosh

I think I shall have to get a specialist to take a look at it,

No the mirror head was not replaced, just the glass mirror itself as it was cracked, I should take the door panel off and take a closer look this weekend. at the connections.
Hopefully I can find someone to code the device at the same time.

Unfortunately I do not have iDrive  and yes it is a major pain.

    UPDATE

I was driving on the motorway this morning when ANOTHER issue arose, I was driving with my cruise control on and this fault happened where it cut off my cruise control and the dash lights lit up with the dial gauges flickering???

It stopped after a while however it started happening again?

I was told to disconnect my battery for 10 seconds and then try to start the car which worked for an hour until it happened again.

It does not seem to affect the cars power or drive, however it is messing with the electrics as it cuts off my cruise control.

I have been told it could be a B+ Recall with bmw as suggested here https://www.williamsbmwrochdale.co.uk/news/2018/may/recall-information/

    Any other suggestions ?

    Kind Regards,
    Daniel

Gauges flickering certainly could be the wiring fault. You can check on the Vehicle Enquiry gov site if it's due any outstanding recalls. If so, I'd get in touch with your nearest BMW dealer, describe the symptoms and they should get you booked in quickly.

I have just used the BMW website where you enter your VIN for recall check and also the GOV.UK website and they both suggest that my car is NOT due a recall, I shall give a call and see what they say.

    Thanks again @bishbosh
