I knew it was too good to be true.

Just when I was about to write up how good the 640d Gran Coupe is proving to be it has thrown up its first fault.:(

Over the last few days I had thought the engine felt a little uneven at start up and also the gearchange was maybe not quite as smooth as usual. I have also noticed a drop in MPG over the last few days compared to the norm.

Driving home last night I got a ‘Drivetrain warning’ that flashed up for around 5 seconds and then disappeared, it was not showing on the idrive when I stopped.

Pulling up at a junction there was a noticeable smell of exhaust fumes in the car and when I stopped and turned the car off at home there was a little steam coming out of the exhaust..

    The car seemed okay today.

Have spoken to my local dealers service manager who is currently trying to sort a loan car before booking me in. Hopefully they sort something within the next couple of days otherwise I will phone BMW assist.

Any ideas as to the fault? I realise ‘drivetrain fault’ is a pretty generic message but I am wondering if it is the EGR valve @kleynie recently had an issue with?

Car is still well within the AUC warranty, I will update when the car goes in and I get some feedback..

    Could be a blocked DPF.

Hopefully not as while I don't do high mileage the car gets a decent 200-400 mile trip at least once a month.

My money is on the EGR valve. Mine was running very slightly rough before it failed but I had no error messages on the idrive, apart from low coolant. I don’t suppose it’s been using coolant?

No warnings on coolant level, although I have not physically checked it.
Just had a call from the service manager. I am dropping my car off tonight and collecting a loan car. His best guess is also the EGR valve (he said they had done a couple this week but on 4 cylinder engines) Will update when I hear.

do you not have the bmw assist? They can sort the pickup etc for you. Just call them if anything happens when under AUC warranty.

Hi yes I have assist but so far during BMW ownership have never had to use it as my local dealer normally manages to sort something pretty quickly. In this case I phoned yesterday morning and managed to drop my car off on the way home and collect a 2 series loan car, saving the hassle of getting a hire car.

Everything appears to point to the EGR valve or cooler.. The diesel fume smell, slightly lumpy idle and slightly worse mpg, I checked my coolant level before I took the car in on Friday and it was at the low mark in the tank. In a way I hope it is the EGR as a replacement should solve all the symptoms - will report back when I hear from BMW.

Just heard back from the garage. The EGR valve is being replaced followed by a 'programming update' I am also getting the boot struts replaced while the car is in as the boot was getting very slow to open. Should get the car back tomorrow.
I also got a 'video' of the health check which lasted all of 9 seconds and consisted of the camera pointing at the number plate?!

Same problem, just had my EGR replaced, too soon to know if it has cured the problem of slowly losing coolant, and occasional drive train message.

Make sure your tyres haven't grown when they give you your health check report.

Check the video again - when I got mine, it was painfully slow loading as it kept buffering, the problem i don't think is my internet connection as I don't have any issues watching other videos online etc so I think its BMW side (or whoever they use to host the videos).

At the bottom you need to wait till the bar with the greyish/white line goes to the end then you can play it all "normally" as its buffered locally.

I managed to use a 3rd party tool to download it but it took me around 4 attempts as it kept failing... I thought be nice to keep the videos as part of the "history"... i think my video was around 8MB in total and 58 seconds long.

Nope the video is definitely 9 seconds long..

I still have the 2 series as while the EGR is fitted one of the struts they ordered to fix the boot opening was damaged so they have had to order another from BMW.. should be collecting tomorrow hopefully back in rude health!

I have my car back with a new EGR valve. It feels significantly better. I suspect that it had started to gradually fail over a period of weeks causing the whiff of diesel fumes on occasion and the progressively worse rough idle / slightly hesitant performance. It now feels very smooth at idle and lightening quick:). Interestingly the service manager said they had had a 'significant' number of EGR valve failures recently and that the new EGR fitted to my car was a revised part compared to the original which was the reason for the reprogramming.
I looked over the health check paperwork - no growing tyres for me. The garage I used seemed able to use a tyre gauge and even spotted I had my 18" winter wheel and tyre set fitted!

These cars are quick, I never noticed a lack of performance but I don’t drive like I’ve stolen it.

Unlike this Bentley driver... shocking. Luckily they caught the driver from his blood on the airbag

To be fair I probably drive this car slower than anything else I have owned - mainly just waft about the place, although that could be my age! The new EGR valve just seems to have made it even more eager:unsure:
