I realised the other day that the passenger side door mirror on my 640d isn't auto-dimming or demisting. I initially thought that the wires may have become detached at the back but it does look a different style of mirror to the driver's side, which works perfectly. Maybe the previous owner replaced it at some point. So I go online to source a new mirror glass and from BMW's eBay shop I can get one for £457.01 !!! That has got to be one of the biggest rip-offs I've ever seen! Needless to say I won't be buying one! How can they possibly justify that? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/194194952614
It uses electrochromic glass, which is usually 5 - 10 times the price of regular glass. Even so, at that price, Michael has not just been taken but has completely disappeared without trace.
Wow, I wonder if I can get a security lock for mine! Talking of prices the quote for my side view camera from BMW is also eye watering (£340) especially when I can get a new one on EBay for less than £80..
Maybe the previous owner replaced it with one from the 'bay of E' which is why it isn't working properly now. I've bought lots of stuff that turned out to be greatly inferior to the genuine article. Having said that I must agree that many of BMW spare parts are grossly overpriced. I remember the last time I had to replace a mirror - it was back in the late 80s and that cost over £150 - a lot of dosh back then. I hit a seagull at over 100mph and the entire mirror assembly just disappeared - leaving a few wires dangling.
