I dyed the Soft Top on my last E46 Convertible but it was only to refresh it , not to change the colour completely . I suppose it could be done but you would really need to check with the dye manufacturer . I used Renovo to dye and reseal the roof on mine . I would imagine that if you did manage to change the colour you would really need to make sure it was sealed very , very thoroughly in case the dye got washed out and the original colour showed through . I did a thread on this on the old Bmwland but am afraid it s lost , like many other threads when the old Land stopped.
I m sure an email to the likes of Renovo might help clarify this for you .

I would look at replacing the roof if a black roof is important to you. The dyes are designed to refresh the existing colour, and I very much doubt you will achieve a good finish with a cover up.

Have a look at http://www.carhood.com as they get favourable reviews on the boxster forums

Renovo products are very good - I use their cleaner, then dye, then waterproofer years ago and still looks good - mind you mine stays indoors!
