That's the way a lot of suppliers of software are now headed. I have Adobe Photoshop which I purchased a few years ago, but I now believe that it's not possible to purchase - only to lease it for an annual charge.

I don't use Carly but I understand originally it was a one off purchase but now they've moved to a subscription model.

£54 a year is a bit steep imo.

Would you not be better off downloading ncs expert and getting an obd cable?

You've every right to go nuts. It's called rip-off-time, now they have established themselves (and broadly known as the Microsoft pricing model).

And don't forget the BT obd2 adapter specifically designed so that it only works on a BMW. Crazy.

Yes that is correct. If you had the older version installed prior to the introduction of the new charging model, then you got upgraded for free (and received all the additional optional paid for add-ons thrown in as well!) and will continue to receive all updates for free indefinitely. As the new software piggy-backs off the old software, I guess that will only apply as long as you keep that phone! But I haven't looked into that yet. Also you don't have to have their bespoke B/Tooth OBD adaptor, as mine runs off a cable connection just fine, in spite of Carly's 'dire' warnings that it might not work as expected. ;-)

I have the old system, I believe your correct in suggesting you get the upgraded software with no subscription, however I believe you still have to pay for the upgrades, battery registration etc!
I could be wrong, as if not scanned for a while
However last time I noted a requisite to change software but no ther changes or charges !

When I was 'migrated' over in *April/May 2018, I was assured that I was getting the FULL version including ALL functions with Lifetime Updates completely FOC as a 'Thank You' for being an existing customer. I have just checked my Battery Registration function, and can confirm that it is available for me to use without extra cost, something which I did not originally purchase. As far as I understand it, it is no longer possible to buy in-app upgrades, as you will either have the Full Version or Free Trial. However, if you did not take up the offer to migrate to the new version and still have the old software, it may be possible to buy in-app upgrades on demand, but I cannot verify that.

Also after reading some of the comments in the Android Play store for the Carly app, I now understand that it is indeed possible to restore the full version even after changing your phone/hardware, by emailing the author using your original Play store email address.

    * I believe in order to qualify for the free upgrade to the full version, you needed to have purchased the original software before 31st March 2018.

I have had carly for a while, long before they went to the new model. I had to pay for a couple of add-ons, but upgraded free on one of my phones (kept the old version on the other, 'just in case') for use on my mini. Now I have the 2 series I find Bimmercode much more use, and as far as I know its a one-off purchase of about £27.
Another option would be to just have it coded by someone near you, or from someone like Craig at BR Diagnostics who may be able to do it remotely, although I don't know how that works. You wont have the app, but then again you wont be paying £54 a year :)

Unfortunately for me, Bimmercode doesn't support the E9x derivative of the 3 series beemers. :-(

If you open the app and choose the Settings icon in the cockpit view, scroll down to the bottom and check the version number. The current one issued on 07/12/18 is version 29.17.

My Carley is a one off. If they are going to a sub model I won't be buying it, because I won't need it.

We have two cars so the cost splits. Compared to dealer rates it is cost effective. If you only have to buy it once.

Some software houses are taking the pee with what they charge for subs. There will always be alternatives.

Harry,do you or any one else have these alternatives?, all i'm trying to do initially is set the mirrors to close/open on ignition on/off and mute that noise when not wearing seat belt. £54 is a bit expensive.
ps my laptop is fubar at the mo, so only tablet / phone apps are useful to me.

    Cheers Rich

    Sorry Rich. I've got Carly.

A BMW Indie might be able to code it for the price of a drink. Dealers' rates are silly - unless you know a friendly one.

There was a system where you bought the modules you wanted, downloaded, configured using software and put it on a USB stick to feed to the car. That looked OK but I went with Carly. If they want to flip me to a subscription, I'll be interested to hear of any alternatives.
