Being the cynical type that I am, I don't believe the hype. Has anyone been to one of these and got a genuine deal? Spookily enough I'm actually back in the UK on those dates!

I went to one last year.
Shamefully dismal sales pitch and only interested in hard selling
Used car prices appear inflated in the run up, to lure the potential customer,
We left feeling it was the method adopted to clear stock vehicles as new bespoke orders weren’t really favoured and conversations returned to what they had in stock. Custom builds had little or no discount offerings!
Test drives were also limited, with poor choice!
Though the coffee and biscuits were nice as always

i'm firmly in the 'yeah, whatever' camp especially as I got such a stonking discount last time round without a special event.

I don't think there's any danger of them ever inviting me to one of these, since I'm a virtual stranger to the Dealership network. :D

I received a similar letter a couple of years ago so I phoned the dealership thinking I could talk about the "unique deals". The receptionist put me through to some sort of marketing woman who wouldn't talk about car prices but wanted me to make an appointment to visit on the basis this "exclusive event" was overwhelmed with enquiries and if I turned up on the day I may not get to view any of the cars. Anyway, I declined the offer of an appointment, but, as it happened I called in the dealership on the day and it was empty, not a customer in sight. So I spoke to a salesman about the "unique deals" and of course they were no better than anyone could get on the internet, maybe worse. So yeah, you're right to be cynical! They will probably follow up this letter with a phone call.

By the way, the letter is (as far as I can remember) worded more or less the same as the one I received, so I guess it's from the same marketing company.

I have always avoided the VIP show room events as i just see them as the hard sell to shift what they have i stock

I did get an e mail listing some of the 5er,s that they had in the event and they were offering around 10K off list which you can find on a regular basis on the AUC website so didnt look that special to me, you are taking a stock car that they have specked rather than looking for or ordering a new car with the toys that you want

The only dealer event i did was the launch of the new 5 series which was held at a country house and there was no hard sell just the chance to drive the new 5 and ask questions about the range I enjoyed that day but dont like hard sale events

Best 'hard sell' I ever got was an invite from Porsche Guildford to spend a day at Millbrook in a variety of 911s. Weird thing was that I'd never bought a car from them but went in once to have a natter about a Boxster and that was it. Epic day but I felt a right fraud!

Just that I knew I was never going to buy one (he says, several years later on the verge of, er, buying another Boxster!).

I've just received a VIP invitation to my local dealer for this weekend. Worded something "You have been chosen to receive a Golden Ticket at our VIP event"
Sounds like Willy W*nker's Chocolate Factory.

I went to a similar VIP event at a VW dealer 3 years ago, when I still had my Golf GTi. It also promised fantastic discounts to select ticket holders. I was, at the time, getting ready to buy a new replacement for the Golf so was a serious buyer. When I got there, the sound of pop music coming from a DJ's decks could be heard. The showroom had fake flames and life size cardboard cutouts of Brad Pit and Angelina Jolie. There were only a couple of other privileged VIP invitees in the showroom, so I expected to get the sales pitch while browsing the exhibits. The salesmen though, ignored everyone and chatted among themselves. In the end I had to approach them and ask for a test drive of the latest Golf GTD. I wasn't that impressed - lots of tyre noise from the large alloys. Back in the showroom I asked what special discounts were available and the sales guy said that the only special deals were on the VW Up! He priced up a new GTD with all the options I wanted, it came to £32,500. I asked what kind of discount they could do, and he sarcastically sneered that they weren't allowed to discount cars as it was against company policy. o_O This was before the manure hit the fan with the great VW scandal. I told him in words of one syllable that I was obviously wasting his and my time, and walked out never to darken their door again. A total and absolute WASTE of TIME!

A month later I purchased my 330d with 1200 miles and loaded with extras for less money. So I guess that VW salesman did me a favour. :)

So my impression of VIP events is that they are a load of old Bollox. :D

Same here! I got a WhatsApp message only the other week. It said if you do not wish to get any more messages such as these, send back the message "STOP".

    STOP . :D

Now for that, I would have been first in the queue. Sounds like a great day out! The 911 has been on my list for a good few years. I might get the chance to squander the pension one day, if I can persuade the wife, which shouldn't be too hard as she's a 911 fan as well. :)

Mate, it was a brilliant day and I couldn't quite believe it when the invite dropped through the letter box. We met for a late breakfast in a very nice country club about 30 mins away from Millbrook and after gorging on whatever you wanted set off for the proving ground in a convoy of about six 911s. First for me was the Targa and my co-pilot was a policeman so we got on like a house on fire as he was ex-military. Then I hopped in a Carrera S at the track and he demonstrated the different suspension set ups and how the car handled on grass(!), on weird cambered roads and around corners. Then it was onto a GT3 RS (I think, something like that anyway) around the bowl at 130 mph. To be honest, that was absolutely terrifying as I didn't know the car, it was on tyres with about one groove of tread on it and it was damp. Oh, and it was an absolute monster in terms of sheer power. After white-knuckling my way around the bowl it was onto the mile straight for a bit of straight line fun in a Turbo. All in all, huge fun. As a selling technique, it's got to be up there with anything and I'm sure if I had a pocketful of cash I'd have bought on the day. I actually quite liked the Targa..

Have had invites to these in the past but never went and would nt go anyway. Nice for a day out and a few test drives perhaps , but if you ve no intention of changing your car round about that time there s no point , and of course it s a selling opportunity for Dealers, there s no point in them having these Special Events otherwise.

Wonderful! I would have paid good money for a day like that. (y)

When I was working in Amsterdam in the 1970's, I considered buying a 911 Targa from Schipol Tax Free Cars. In the end I didn't largely because it was bright yellow. I think the tax free price was £8750 which was quite a lot in those days . I opted to place an order on a new Morgan Plus 8 instead - a big mistake . . . But that's another story.

I've had a similar invite in the past and all I've ever bought from a dealer was an oil service and an MOT.

Either that or the £5k warranty work I sent their way once!
