last week i was looking at a BMW 750 LD X drive individual, the cost with individual options was €187,295.00 and my first impression was the paint finish on the car was shocking, the whole car was covered in orange peel paint and it was really bad

I asked the missus if she could see anything wrong with the cars paint and she said it looks like it has got cellulite

i was hard to get it to show in a picture but it was really bad, if i was spending £170 K on a car i would want the paint to look perfect and would not be happy if it was presented like the car above

On the contrary you managed to show just how bad the orange peel is! That is shocking and I wouldn't be happy with that.

It needs a very good paint correction and ceramic coating applied.

looking at the paint i think it would need a full wet sand to get it to a presentable condition but you would not want to be spending that sort of money to correct the paint on a one hundred and seventy grand brand new car

I have never been that impressed with BMW finish, the paint seems durable but the quality of gloss compared to say Audi (did I really just say that) doesn't seems to be there....

I doubt the new owner will even notice the paint finish, most likely it will be on lease to someone like a CEO or rather the company he's running. Maybe the second owner will notice!

I’ve said it before, BMW paint is awful, the parts of my car that have been refinished in the body shop are much better than the original paint.

The finish on my F30 is much better than that 750 LD. But BMW paint seems to be one of the worst for stone chips on the front of the car. Luckily, I only have a couple on the bonnet, which I've touched up, but the bumper will need a respray in few years time. Car paintwork is less durable since EU regulations forced a change to water based paints a few years ago. :(

I ve noticed that the paint on my F33 is nt nearly so hard as it was on the E46 , that said , it s a damn sight better than that 750 LD.

The paint on my old e91 was also horrendous but the Tanzanite Blue on my F31 was much, much better especially after detailing.

I think you'll find similar in most car showrooms these days and some of the cars are even pricier than that.

I was talking to some ex-automotive (Mclaren, Lotus, Aston and Jaguar Land Rover) engineers at work today and they claimed that they used robots to spray and the finish was average at best with plenty orange peel effect (mostly due to water based paints) - they then put approx. 50 hours into a car to flat off and polish the paint to get it perfect but they decided to not carry-on with this as cost was too high, just left the paint with the orange peel finish and no-one complained hence they now don't bother...

When I had some paint work done on my car the painter told me that all bmw’s Have this orange peel on the top coat it’s just the way they do it. When the weather gets abit better I’m planning on wet sanding my car to give it a better finish
