well as the shackles were removed on Saturday and we have gone from stay at home to stay local (5 miles) and we can now go anywhere in wales

l finally manage to go out in the car just for a run for no other reason than l wanted to, we were due to go to Scotland to see mum and east Yorkshire to visit our daughter at Christmas but neither of those trips went ahead, so all the car has really done since December is potter back and fore to the shops not because we needed shopping more because that was all we were allowed to do. and the lockdown was policed around here and l was stopped three times at police roadblocks for the please explain. the other day l had to make a short trip on the train to collect a van for work and British transport police were on the train "what is the purpose of your journey" so our lockdown was enforced and fines were regularly issued for non essential journeys

so today Wales was my oyster and l was going to make the most of it , so up for 7.00am and out before 8.00am heading for Dolgellau then on towards Porthmadog where we had a quick fuel stop and £65.00 of 99 octane super unleaded and we were off again heading towards Caernarfon and Bangor and at around 75 miles we hit our first dual carriageway so we then had 60 miles cruising along the north wales expressway towards Broughton where we had to get off the A55 and head across country to Wrexham as had we stayed on the A55 towards Chester we would have crossed the border into England

a quick stop for a supermarket sandwich and we were on our way again across landegla moor towards Corwen, Bala lake and back towards Dolgellau and 14 miles from there back home

so we did 205 Miles total with an average speed of 45.6 mph and the car returned 29.1 mpg for the journey which was very good because we were not hanging around and were pressing on for a lot of the journey

so all in all l was very happy with my first real Hoon in a car l have owned for nearly four months now, it was a good few hours behind the wheel and the car was superb, what better way to spend a day off than getting some seat time in your new car that you have not been allowed to drive until today

That sounds like a great way to spend a day. I know some of those roads reasonably well, they will have been a decent test for the car.

Good to hear you are gelling with the car after having to pretty much leave it locked up for the winter.

Super - really pleased for you.

Nothing better than getting out for a decent run in your new car.

For some reason I completely missed the fact you had the 640i and not a derv. Very nice. Good choice of power plant and not bad mpg for the size of the car and sporty driving.

Llandovery is around 60 miles south of where l live and yes l have driven that road a few times but that is best driven off season as there can be to many Flip Flops on the road during the holiday season and it can get a bit frustrating stuck behind a 30mph sightseer when you want to push on

the area around llangela to corwen where l was this morning has some good driving roads and the one that springs to mind is the EVO triangle a road that was made famous by EVO Magazine using this area to test all the press cars. but sadly the road safety on the triangle has now been improved

they have fitted 50mph average speed cameras to the whole area around the triangle so no point heading up there for a fun driving road anymore

Oooh, that's bloody annoying. Any other roads you would recommend? Once we can revisit Wales I'll likely get up early one warm summer morning and head over for some larks.

yes my car is the 640i X Drive 6GT l would have happily bought the 630D 6GT but was concerned about the residuals due to the market being twitchy about diesels

my car will probably loose money like it is going out of fashion anyway but four years down the road l dont want a dealer saying "sorry it is a diesel and nobody is buying diesels anymore" the same will probably happen to the 640i but it is a more fun way to loose money :rofll::rofll:

l do enjoy a loop around the Elan valley reservoirs and then a jaunt over the B4574 and A4120 to Ponterwyd and then on down to Aberystwyth

l have a lot of single track often unclassified roads around here that l love driving but many of them l wouldn't go near in the 6gt and certainly not in a Ferrari but they would be a real hoot in your 2CV

l save theses roads for a hoon around in the company van as a change from the trunk roads

it was good to get out without worrying about covid lockdown rules and just having a drive around

it has been a long time since l went out for a drive just because l could. no reason for the journey other than to spend some time in the car

50 mph limits and average speed cameras are a creeping curse that will ruin the enjoyment of driving some of the best roads around the country. They introduced them onto the famous A537 Cat and Fiddle, Buxton to Macclesfield road some years ago, which is near me in the Peak District. There are lots of scenic roads that are perfectly safe to drive at the NSL of 60 Mph, yet the powers to be, deem it essential to reduce the limit to 50 Mph. That's the Nanny state for you. :(

we have enjoyed these roads for many years but the internet is bringing to much attention to them because people cant stay off social media and YouTube. the classic has to be the three drivers that posted footage of themselves driving at speeds of 120 mph on the triangle on YouTube and then they were surprised when north wales police paid them a visit

also the bikers had become a big issue gathering in large numbers and then riding at speed in large groups. a few riders were tolerated but when you get groups of over 100 bikes you will attract the attention of the local police

and sadly the speed cameras are now used to control what was seen as anti social behaviour and it was becoming a real nuisance to the local residents

Those are great driving roads even these days.

My childhood was spent in the back of an E23 728 or E24 628csi then 635csi heading to Bala Lake as we used to sail there and some of the roads are just awesome. Occasionally head back that way and it still doesn't disappoint. I wonder how I got into Bimmers!!

I have done the Black Mountain pass too as have friends in the Swansea Valley. There are some fabulous roads all over Wales once off the main tourist drags.

That is true - social media and even magazine publications have been the downfall, in attracting large numbers of people. A travel writer called Pete McCarthy said that his No.1 rule was - "If you find a wonderful place to stay at a reasonable price, don't bang on about it, because next time you go, you won't be able to get in."

Same up here for the now named and notorious NC500 road trip. Massive downside to having too much media exposure.

the trouble with a lot of the best driving roads and mountain passes around here they are single track with passing places. great at 4.00am in the morning on a nice June morning but an absolute drivers nightmare come lunch time when the tourist's arrive and don't understand what "Ffordd un trac a mannau pasio" means and by the time they get to the English part they are passed the sign

this is why l do not recommend taking a nice car on some of the passes around here because people are happy to drive past a passing place and then look at you daft when they have to reverse back. l had a driver in an SUV trying to reverse 100 yards and it was hilarious to watch l would have been far quicker reversing a quarter of a mile than waiting for them to reverse a very short distance

An alternative now proving popular to the Evo is further north up A5 past Pentefoelas join the B4407 go up through Ysbyty Ifan then join B4406 back down to A5. Seen some very nice motors on that area last year before lock down
