Big noise

I have a 120d cabriolet 2012 been brill until 2 weeks ago the coming off a dropped kerb there was an almighty crack from the car ,i looked all round and could find nothing even took all undergaurds off and still nothing ,ANYONE any ideas

How does the car drive? Any sitting off the level or drag on the steering when on the move [slowly!]? Did now have any sense of where the noise came from?

 

If it's a broken spring, the noise would be like a gun being fired - a LOUD crack. The ride height wouldn't necessarily drop by much if it breaks right on the last coil, which is quite common.

 

Am another who would say a broken spring, nothing that a quick look won t find out .

 

Be mindful that not all broken springs make a noise, I’ve had two snap and didn’t even know.

Easy to check, look inside the wheel arch and grab the coils. Check top and bottom.

 

it only happens when i go off a dropped kerb with steering locked over, does not affect steering brakes etc had all under trays off nothing looks sinister,seem to be coming from nearside

 

There is the possibility in a circumstance like you describe, the spring jumps on the spring perch. Not unknown, not just with BMW. Nothing wrong when you examine its position.

If you are not a good diy mechanic... some aren’t...
A local garage would take a quick look without any / too much cost.. for peace of mind..
