Hi Guys, looking to change my old 320i to a 2017 M140i.

Based on the below, can anyone recommend which of these extras are worth looking for please? If you have any experience with them even better :)

    1) Pro nav vs basic nav
    2) Steering wheel paddle shift (worth it?)
    3) Digital speedo vs "half digital"

I don't really know what difference there is between the newer digital speedos (seems to be on 2018+ models) to the older half analogue "half digital" speedos on the 1 Series... I guessing it just looks nicer?

Also does the Pro Nav have more features or is it just nicer to have the wider screen?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Welcome aboard. I hope you get the answer you are looking for!(y)

I would always go for the better Sat Nav. Perhaps because I am lazy when it comes to travelling around. My X1 has the Pro Nav and I use it all the time. It has paddles, and I never use them. Digital is nice, I had it on my Audi Q5, but not on the X1. It just depends on what is important to you.

    Hello and welcome.

The pro-nav and media ( make sure it’s both) is 100% worth the upgrade. I really wouldn’t buy an 40i car without one. I’ve got this in my 2017 440i and is a much better product than the business version (although the 440 didn’t have the business option). It looks so much better as a wide screen in my eyes, and the split screen is easier to use, the hard drive for music is great.
Steering wheel paddles are another must for me, little point having the fun of such a decent drivers car if you can’t take over and swap the cogs yourself. Put the box in Sport and off you go....really engaging and you have genuine control over the gear changes.
I was looking for a full digital display on mine but ended up buying the standard analogue display. These have a “full black screen” digital display, which means the lower part of the screen has an adorable screen that can show you fuel, range, nav directions, music etc. I find this useful and am happy I went for the analogue over the full digital.

You will have to check the spec carefully on the 140i cars, lots came out with some pretty basic kit. On top of the pro-nav and steering wheel paddles I would want the HK upgrade stereo, it is excellent. Oh, and fully electric seats with memory.....

    Hope that helps.

Hi - good luck with your search.

For me, options like those shouldn't be mutually exclusive. They may be difficult to track down collectively in a car, but if you have some patience and a bit of luck, you should be able to bag all three (oh and be willing to travel for the right car).

Specifically though, for me the most important of all of those options is the Pro Nav. The Pro Nav has much greater functionality, is easier to read and the basic nav looks cheap IMO.

The steering wheel paddles I tend to use to drop down a few gears to activate engine braking and/or upshift quicker if I've a cold engine. I don't tend to use them on spirited drives since I find the gearbox pretty good at working out what I want to do.

Couldn't care less about the speedo, frankly.

In every model line up there will be approved used cars out there which are well optioned - it's just a matter of keeping an eye out and jumping when you find one. I've always managed it with BMWs and know from bitter experience of impatience that making compromises on options which I wanted ends up souring the ownership experience. With my current Cayenne I searched for 9months until the right car came up and then I purchased it that very day when it appeared online. It was worth the wait.

I'm sure you'll manage to get everything you're looking for.

Welcome to the site BTW! :)

Thanks for the prompt responses guys I appreciate it, this is exactly the feedback I was hoping for...

I'm pretty sold on going for the Pro Nav now, also I'll look out for the HK sound system.

Not too fussed about the digital speedo's I was just curious more than anything, it's hard to find info online about them and I think the 1 Series has a more basic version.

I think the paddle shift could be fun but I won't reject a car if it doesn't have them, hopefully I'll get lucky and get it anyway :)

I'm sad to let my e93 go after 4 years, but it's completely impractical and painfully slow because it's so heavy LOL!

The biggest selling point of the 40i cars is the amazing B58 engine. It is an absolute peach. In the 140i it has a bit more grunt than in mine, so should really shift. I came from a 2012 E92 (in 320d guise) so was pretty impressed with the change.
Some may say the interior isn’t amazing, but I am pleased with the feel of the materials and the solidity of the contact points. A few cost cutting changes certainly, and noticeable from the otherwise bomb proof E92/3 interior, but still a great place to sit. The 1 series is similar as far as I am aware.

Good luck on the search. Make sure you have your list on non-negotiable spec to hand before you physically go and see one, otherwise you may be tempted into one without....head over heart etc.

Yes I've heard the B58 is a cracking engine..! I do still love the E92/93 cars, it's just time for me to move on, the inside tech is a biggie for me, I'm fed up of sticking my TomTom on the window and having nothing but radio and and aux cable  (it has bluetooth hands free calls, but you can't use it for music).

Completely agree about the solid interiors on the E92/3, everything feels solid, mines a 2008 and the interior almost looks new (apart from the typical steering wheel and gear knob wear), even the doors feel bomb proof due to its weight. I had a 2016 C Class hire car once and the first thing I noticed was the doors were so light they felt like plastic! The 1 Series will probably be the same to be fair.

I completely agree with the "must have" spec when viewing... I made that mistake before and bought the first car I saw due to pure excitement haha!

Thanks for adding the Autotrader link, nice find but a bit out of budget unfortunately, I'm in the 18-19K region so will probably end up with a higher milage example.

I will be as patient as I can and wait for the right car, however I'm not sure how long I can hold out for... certainly can't wait 9 months like Spuffington did, but then again it's only a 1 Series not a Cayenne lol.

Hi Lewis, nice to meet you.

My 2-series car has the pro nav, it just looked so good compared to the basic one with large plastic surround. I'm glad to say it works better with the split screen too.
The cluster is of the half digital type (like in the car Wynne suggested) it is nice I suppose, but nothing to write home about really.
It has the HK sound too with the extra speakers, certainly very nice sound.

As he said above Spuffington couldn't be more right, spend some time looking for the right car or you may end up with buyer's remorse. I searched for the right one for ages on the Approved Used site, and it has proved to be the correct strategy even though I ended up with quite an older car than I initially wanted.

The only option I consider a 'must' is a heated steering wheel.
Wouldn't look at a car without it.

    Kindest regards
    Carl.

Whilst we’re all different we also have different desires

From the list I’d suggest pro nav
Though I’d be more focused on LED dynamic lighting, Then Pano roof,
Whilst digital dash is nice, the paddles are a gimmick, anyone who says they use them all the time is lying, they’re a gimmick
I’ve used them once and find the change is jerky!

Would be interested to see if the 1 series has the heated wheel as an option.
Had one on a hire Nissan once, not sure what the point was beyond the first few seconds on a very cold day.

Liar McLiar here then. I find them fun when the road and mood suits.

(Although probably only use them 25% of the time, so strictly not a total liar)

That made me chuckle, if only I was still that young. My two sons are in their early 20s, I’m a month or so away from the half tonne.

Welcome to the forums, just reiterating what the others have said, the Pro Nav is a definite, the full digital dash is very smart, would love to have it in mine, but alas couldn't find one, i have found out it can be retrofitted though :thumleft: as for the paddle shifts, i love mine, don't use them all the time, but on the occasions i do, they are great and add to the fun of driving a very quick car.

I think you will get different answers from all of us, it all comes down to personal preference. From the options you mention Pro Nav is definitely better but Business Nav or basic Nav in the F series of cars is way better than the Business Nav of old. Apart from the screen size and lack of split screen the Business Nav in my wife's 2017 118i is actually pretty similar to the 2018 Pro Nav in the 640d. As for the digital dash it is a gimmick and a bit naff in anything other than standard mode. I actually preferred the analogue dials in my pre lci 6 series than the digital dash in my 'new' 2018 6 series. Paddles are a waste of time, the 8 speed automatic box is an amazing bit of kit in standard or sport mode it always seems to be in the right gear to me and lets face it a BMW is not an Italian Supercar. I have used the paddles twice in the 5 years of owning BMW's with them fitted..

the people that say Paddles are a waste of time are talking rubbish

when l am rolling down the street with the car in sports mode so the exhausts valve is open and l see one of my friends coming out of the post office after collecting their pension. l let the revs build right up in third gear lift off and drop a couple of gears with the paddle shifters to get the pops and bangs going

l have never been very good at lip reading but l am sure they are all saying "wow how cool is that"

Definitely the most important is to go for the Pro Nav iDrive and media.

As for the others - I prefer the analogue instruments, plus my F30 has the black digital option which can display a range of info. I have the paddles and have to say that they hardly get used - the ZF 8 speed box is so good, it does a much better job. The only time I do use the paddles occasionally is to downshift on long steep descents to drop down a couple of ratios, or sometimes to short shift up a gear.
