How often should the antifreeze be replaced in a F10/F11? Is it ''For Life'' antifreeze ,if so, how long does it continue to have good anti corrosion properties?

    Hi,

BMW deem the lifetime of the coolant as lifetime however I doubt it is 'for life' even though BMW say it is …..I wouldn't take the coolant beyond 4-5 years and would replace with genuine BMW coolant (it isn't very expensive and can't cause issues with mixing of types)

    Thanks

For the E series the coolant was specified as "for life", but usually "for life" in BMW terms is 100,000 miles and perhaps 10 years.

If I recollect correctly when you buy replacement coolant from BMW it says it has a 5 year life. However when I changed mine at 5 years it was it very good shape, no sludge, still a clear blue/green colour and the anti-freeze protection was still around -17C or lower.

These days there's some pretty decent universal yellow anti-freeze available compatible will all engines and all other anti-freeze. The problem is a drain and flush will still leave some blue\green anti-freeze in the car.
