At last the whirring noise has gone after a visit to a new local garage who were excellent. The cause was found to be the compressor and on investigation it was found that the system only had 195g of gas in it and absolutley no oil:yikes:based on the fact that most compressors store 50% of the original factory fill inside the housing.

Thankfully I had provided parts and asked him to oil balance the compressors before replacement and this is how we found that the fitted unit was dry, however having said that the replacement was the same so we are presuming that the breakers had drained it before dispatch as per the courior rules these days. The units come factory filled with 100ml. The system had been recharged twice by kwikfit but there is a possiblity that they screwed up based on there no charge policy if its not 10% cooler after recharge, I am suspicious that they may not of even charged it but have no proof as was given no print out on either visit. Can't blame them for the noise as I had it before visiting them. No evidence of any A/C service from the previous owner but this is typical as many don't bother and as the BMW system is very efficient and it will still cool very well even with only 195gm of gas & no oil as mine was freezing in this state. I am unsure if the A/C charging machines can inject a large amount of oil if required but mores to the point that you will not know its level unless you drain it anyway. So for those with the issue which is very common across the whole BMW range I would suggest a complete A/C flush followed by a full oil fill so you have a starting point. This garage did a standard leak test and one with Nitrogen and both passed as leak free he also checked over the system with a UV lamp and nothing was found so I have no idea where the original oil went? Obviously the gas level overtime drops. While he was there he fitted the replacement alternator as its right above the compressor anyway and fitted a new belt and tensioner which @ 100K looked pretty shot.

    Parts cost £217.00
    Labour £290.00
    Total £507.00

So cheaper than my BMW warranty @ £76 a month (which I cancelled 4 months ago) with £250.00 excess & labour for investigation @ £150.00+ vat per hr. I am dam sure BMW would of charged for diag and wouldn't of replaced the compressor as not failed. All in all a good result I think for me and hopefully the above will help others. Just google the problem "BMW Whrring noise from A/C) its very common.

    Rgds

    Peter

(P.S If anyone know's where the oil went pls let me know:LOL:)

    Good news......at last!

You hit the nail on the head regarding lack of air con servicing, I’ve had a few cars that haven’t seen a service from new.
Lack of oil results in drying seals, allowing vapour/gas to escape. Can be a tiny gap over a long period of time. Think about how many joins there are on a typical systems, lots of seals.
I’ve found this out the hard way.....
