Can anybody help. I have just picked up my new car. 520d Tourer. 2015. 61000 miles. I got it home on Saturday. On Sunday morning. I couldn't help but notice it seems a little noisy on tick over/idle. Is this normal for this engine. Im anything but a mechanic or a car nut.
I have been in touch with garage I purchased it from. But unfortunately its a 300 mile round trip from home to the garage. I am just trying to get a feel for what you guys think the problem could be.
I have attached a youtube video. Please excuse the wind noise.

I ll look forward yo your replies.

    Many Thanks

    @craig johnston
    Welcome craig

Please review the attached video, whilst I’m not concluding, the video should offer the check areas and similarities of timing chain noise
The noise could be something as simple as exhaust flexi pipe mounting broken, however remote diagnosis without the car in front will invariably give the wrong diagnosis

Send a copy of the video to the garage - tell them you believe it's the timing chain about to snap (a well known issue with the N47 engine) and ask them to pick it up as you do not want it to snap on the journey to them which would then cost the garage a lot more to rectify.

A 2015 chain shouldn't snap. For hearing if it really is the timing chain you'd have to listen to the back of the engine. To me, it sounds more like injector noise.

    What's the service history like?

There are plenty of 2015 registered cars with N47 engines and they have been known to stretch or at worst snap no matter what year of manufacture. If it's a B47 engine then I would agree with you but that to me sounds dreadful and has all the hallmarks of the chain rattling. I could however be erring on the side of caution.

Can the OP tell from which part of the noise is coming from specifically - the N47 chain is at the back of the engine.

I’m in agreement on both counts, the noise is destinct
The engine vibration is excessive as it’s seen to kick and rock.......
The state of the engine has its own story and assumptions of neglect can be made... to what level has the neglect been....

First off, check exactly which engine it has.

There will be a sticker on the driver's door post where it will say either N47 or B47 and the production month of the car.

The M47 is the one with known chain problems although engines built / produced after March 2011 less so but still possible on an engine likely built in early 2015.

Either way that engine needs to be checked by the selling garage - hopefully it was bought from a BMW dealer

That's the B47 engine - did a new quote on BMW Insured Warranty putting in the reg plate.
Diagnostics would help to determine if the excessive vibration is caused by faulty injectors.

If you’ve just bought it.... 300 mile round trip or not... that needs going back to where it came from.... unless you really did buy it without any wArranty at all...

    Good evening.
Many thanks for all those who have replied. I have had the car to a garage today. They have confirmed what you have all said. That’s is a poorly sounding engine.
I have informed the selling garage that the car is un driveable and that I would like the car picked up and a full refund.
I have looked long and hard for this particular car. Totally gutted.

If you like it then get the faults read and see if its something simple.

My head is saying ditch it. Not sure what damage has been done. However my heart is saying get it sorted.w
Is there Not a chance the damage could keep showing it’s ugly head in years to come. My plan was to keep it for a good few years

It depends what the fault is on the car, could just be something simple.

If it’s nothing major.... and your happy with it... keep it...
    Few questions arise here...
Was it too cheap...what’s the history... what’s the spec and how does that fit with the price...etc etc etc.... if any doubt, leave it out and walk away... if it was cheap, there’s a reason why...!!
Money well spent, will keep its worth longer... even if it does seem expensive at the outset..

It’s a lovely car but, it’s a mass produced car in a popular colour, granted the option list will differ
I’d suggest getting writing confirmation from selling dealer, word of mouth is pointless and refutable
Do not waste your time with phone calls
As hard as the new car head is to lose... you need to swap it and think realistically about trouble and grieve later on
The perfect car is out there!

Edit - there’s no such thing as a perfect car....

All the facts and figures look good. Guess I need a full diagnosis before I make a decision.

I don't know about being a lovely car - just the state of the engine bay would put me off. The amount of dirt in there does not indicate a well cared for car. Does it have a FSH? If not, I would be taking it straight back to the dealer. But I don't know what you paid. Was it a BMW dealer, or a second hand trader?

I did wonder about the state of the engine bay. The car has a full bmw service history. And is immaculate every where else.
I have studied all the services history and the Last MOT docs. All reads ok
I got it from a second hand car dealership who are being very good, so far.

I have an 07 5 series with over 260k miles and my engine bay is spotless compared to the above. I may add that it has never been cleaned ( mine that is). I would question where that car has been driven and how many miles it has actually done.
