As per the E36 ad from the 90's I dusted off my vert yesterday, taxed it and went out for a run, warmed it up then a blast or two. Fabulous to be back in a sonorous straight six with a great manual box.

A straight six with the roof down must be a wonderful sound.

It's a great sound even with the standard exhaust especially after 4000rpm.

I had the current 328i at the same time as the E39 530i and I thought the 2.8 had a better sound...but they were pretty close.

I agree - my e28 528i was the same - of course it was a saloon, but I often used to open all the windows just to hear the sound of the gear changes when pressing on.

Best sound was when accelerating hard in an Alpine tunnel in Austria - I used to deliberately slow right down before entering and then put the foot down once inside the tunnel.

Nostalgia for the 80's and 90's - great days - and you can still enjoy the sound now - lucky you. :D

Ive got the same feeling (almost). Spent yesterday morning cleaning and checking the M235i and this morning saw the first run out in the countryside with a couple of friends in about 17 months. Was lovely being able to use the power for more than just pulling away from traffic lights, and the handling was still as fun as I remembered. The whole morning was spent in sport mode :driving:

Another month before I go out in my vert. Still tucked up in its winter clothes but had a quick peek today and started her up which she did first time.

Something about the sound of an open top BMW I6, pulling a few rpm.

BiL has a Z3 with the M54 2.2 I6. Has a well tuned OEM exhaust, sounds great when out and about.

Nothing screamed like our old 2.8 E39 or our Alpina B10 3.3 from the same period, although the B10 also had a ground shaking exhaust note. I had to put up with the massive acceleration just to appreciate the engine note!

Sometimes sacrifices have to be made, Harry. :driving: :D

I remember your Alpina from when Olli had it. He picked me up from the airport in it when I collected the e34 from him (y)

I often forget I've got a BMW I6 sat outside.

My engine is very subdued in the F11, virtually silent until the engine is working hard, then only a restrained rasp. Even with the panoramic roof open still only just audible.

My 528 tailpipe sounded like a tin full of nails. But once the howl started......

X6M shakes the ground, 320d sounds like a skeleton masturbating in a metal box but thankfully is silent and vibration free in the cabin. Nice linear power delivery too.

I had a 440i on loan last year. The first turbocharged straight six I had driven. It didn't sound much like anything but the power delivery was superb and more linear than my V8. Still feels a bit artificial (as all petrol turbos do to me) but I'll take that kind of performance any day, thank you very much. For day to day use it makes the V8 seem rather irrelevant - but that's what I like about the X6M, it's utterly pointless. The only worthwhile thing it can produce (past the fuel bills) is fun in large quantities.

I haven't spoken to Olli for ages but I know he does drop in here occasionally. It's nice to know the old lags are still mostly upright.

I wondered what came of him, and even asked on here but no-one seemed to know. His expansive wheel & tyre knowledge is missed on the forum, besides his being a really nice chap.
If you're speaking to him again please pass on my regards.

Olli is a lovely bloke. I don't know what his status is at present but if the opportunity presents, I will pass on greetings.

AFAIK Olli hasn't posted or logged into the forum since 22nd October 2016. :(

He's sadly missed - he is a mine of useful info.

I remember the B10 when Oli had it and then you.

Amazing when I think of the friendships from BMWLand. All the trips to the ‘Ring, three guys came to my wedding, and I still keep in contact with those guys to this day. I also see Chris (blingo) regularly and we both do Caterham racing together.

I also loved my e39 530i that I fitted an induction kit too. Sounded great, drove great and was probably an all round better car than my e39 M5 was.

    Absolutely brilliant stuff.
