Hooking a CTEK charger up?

bonnet was open on mine so at least i couldn't make a similar mistake.

Yeah i'm a bit disappointed as i've always considered CTEK to be a quality brand. Will find out if they're true to their word regarding the 5 year warranty. Thankfully i've kept the original packaging so easy enough to return to them.

 

I always charge mine in the garage and leave the bonnet as a clear indicator. I almost dropped my motorcycle some years ago, when I attempted to ride away with the disc lock still attached. Got about 3 feet and came to a SUDDEN halt. Fortunately managed to keep it upright and no damage done, but very embarrassing in a public place!.

@Adie I'm sure that CTEK should honour the warranty, even though it's only just expired. Good luck.

 

Will your car ever fully 'go to sleep' with the bonnet like that? [unless you weigh down the bonnet switch to fool it]

 

I believe the only way you can stop it 'going to sleep' is to plug in the drivers seat belt.

EDIT: But that's if the ignition is on without the engine running

 

I have no idea with these new[er] models, my old bus behaves differently. It was just a thought as the 'waiting for instructions' circuitry might be swallowing the input from the C-Tek? I'm sure someone who knows better than I will be along soon.... @The_Master?

 

When coding/flashing ecu's they say the drivers seatbelt should always be plugged in to stop the car going into sleep mode. Pretty sure that having the bonnet/doors etc open won't stop it 'going to sleep'

 

BMW's will go to sleep (eventually) with a door, boot or bonnet open. I do it all the time in my garage when working on the car. You just have to remember not to close the door or the car will wake up for at least 16 mins before going back to sleep again. Every door open/close awakes the car.

 

I think that it does - the BMW logo disappears from the instrument display after a few minutes. I never normally lock the car in the garage either, to minimise current drain.

 

Different cars behave differently but they will eventually shut down, but left unlocked they will suffer frequent wake ups.

 

Yes it will, but if left unlocked it will wake on its own. On E9x cars it was something like every 2 hours.

 

As I said above, I leave my F30 unlocked in the garage on the assumption that not activating the alarm system will minimise current drain.
Are you saying that I would be better off locking it? I've never see any evidence of the car 'waking up'.

 

Same here, unlocked in the garage, sometimes for 2-3 weeks. Have never seen it wake unless i open a door or the boot

 

It's not a full wake up, on E9x the car periodically wakes up usually the cluster but with the car unlocked it will additionally wake the FRM to check the status of the door locks and can then store frequent wakeups as a suspected cause when the energy diagnosis test plan is worked through on ISTA, when a wake up analysis is carried out the pattern of what units wake up at what intervals shows a pattern matching the car unlocked. I think this was on a BMW puma case rather than an ISTA description.
I put my F36 on ISTA and that doesnt seem to have tests for wake up so maybe its not as big an issue.

 

So another flat battery in the MINI. That said it was sat for 4 weeks not started so need to discipline and make sure it’s used. I suspect a newer battery it would still have started.

Out come the trusty CTEK again. It’s paying for itself over and over.

And still the thread continues….

After leaving my eldest son with my CTEK and thinking his Micra was sorted, it has continued to drain the battery when parked up.
After some research, by me not him, a common fault with the boot switch causes a short and constant drain. I’ve not been able to check this as he is down in Bath, but I’m pretty sure this is the problem. Apparently the switch, one of those rubberised electronic click switches, retains water over the years, causing a short. After some discussion and a video call to check, he has unplugged the connector inside the boot. He won’t have external access to the boot other than climbing over the rear seat, but hopefully this will be a temp fix to the battery drain.
I’ve ordered an upgraded switch, £23, just need to find to drive down and fit it.

 

Well done dad (again). Oh but the feeling of satisfaction when you are right!

Well the MINI is having a good charge all day today and also overnight and will get a run out to meet some MINI friends for coffee in the morning and possibly a trip to Trafford centre for my wallet to get a hammering.

Will then make sure her in doors alternates use every other week.
