Good news to those passing. Always a relief regardless of the age of the car. Main dealers seem to love quoting for brake work, Sytners said my rear discs needed changing at the brake fluid service. They really don’t....”a lip on the disk....” Pah.
Since manufacturers were forced to remove asbestos from pads, discs are now considered as 'sacrificial' items. There are minimum thicknesses for discs which will be given in your Owners' Manual. Simple enough to measure if you have verniers. Something like these would suit your purposes fine - other suppliers/sources are available, Lidl/Aldi have them in from time to time and probably better quality than these, but still cheap. https://www.wish.com/product/5de767c40b1b0b102edefa0f?from_ad=goog_shopping&_display_country_code=GB&_force_currency_code=GBP&pid=googleadwords_int&c={campaignId}&ad_cid=5de767c40b1b0b102edefa0f&ad_cc=GB&ad_curr=GBP&ad_price=4.00&campaign_id=6493229882&gclid=Cj0KCQjwjcfzBRCHARIsAO-1_OpJU55G6-xVjlJNKsZf6jw4qC3eH0kc5lt_1_SjpOimyzdkkY0aGgkaAmajEALw_wcB&hide_login_modal=true&share=web
Well done both on passing the MOT. @Kev2005 I've never ever heard of discs wearing out before the pads, assuming that these are the original set? I would get a second opinion on that if you know of a good indie near you. @Kev2005 you must have a heavy right foot if you've worn the discs out in 23k miles. You'll have to lay off those track days.
well done on the pass but would hold fire on the discs for now how many miles are on your car ? l have done 42k on my car now and it is on original brakes all around. the computer says front brake service in 3200 miles and the service advisor saw this on the key read at log in and mentioned that the car may need brakes but t passed the MOT and no advisories on the discs or pads so happy days
well done on the pass and hope the financial pain wasn't to uncomfortable as for the dealerships being very quiet l for one am not surprised by that. a lot of the footfall at dealers will be financing a car with PCP or HP or some other sort of loan and l know l would be very wary of taking on 30-40 grand of debt in these very uncertain times and cash buyers are a very rare beast indeed so the dealers are going to feel the pinch because of this
Hi all, The car has done 23,615 at the time of service. The computer says 50k miles on front brakes i think and 43k miles on rear (or visa versa) so i too felt bit bizarre they saying they worn and would need replacing when i get pads changed and then saying 10mm brake pads all round.. bit odd so hence concerned the disc is wearing more than the pads? I'm certainly no mechanic and have very little knowledge of cars but I always thought the discs only got worn if the brake pads were very low or worn through as then its metal on metal effectively but as i say i could be totally wrong but that's what i thought. I might take car down to tyre place and have them advise on the brake discs and the thickness if its quiet and i see the chap i know down there. I did try to get some kinda time frame out of him as i was thinking if discs are worn that bad, surely i'd need to do then sooner rather than later but he then said oh when the pads wear out! As i say, on my 5k a year or there about's i'm looking at minimum 7 years, will the discs hold up that long, as they saying they worn now? Bearing in mind also on every other vehicle check, they have never commented on the discs, they just say yeah all fine, x mm left on pads etc, admittedly likely changes as per the tyre tread depth left. Thanks all Kev
@Kev2005 l would not take my car to a tyre place for advice on brakes as some of the bigger chains have been known to say yes you need this that and the other just to generate work l always give the discs a good visual inspection when l swap between summer and winter wheels. but many people are not able to get the wheels off to have a good look at the discs and pads and have to rely on the honesty of garages that hope dont try to pull the wool over our eyes
The brake discs & pads to y knowledge are the ones on the car from new. I got it 1 year old and I've never replaced them and i got the car at approx 6.5k miles on the clock so i doubt previous owner did anything to them either. The garage i go to for tyres is primarily a tyre fitters and from what i know its a local company, they have 2 shops local to me but not aware of them having shops etc elsewhere in the country so its not kwick-fit or similar outfits. Plus i go there fairly regular to have tyres checked etc so i know a couple of the guys there. When i had them check my steering after a knock and they put it on the machine they have to line it all up etc, the guy did me a deal on the price so was a bargain as he knows i go down there regularly and at xmas, i'll always give them a tip etc as they help me out during the year. They never charge for checking tyres and adding air etc. They figure that when it comes time to needing a tyre, they will get the business I just have to make sure I get to see one of the guys i know, the others i don't know that well so couldn't say what they would tell me. Been going there for 3 or 4 years now as its local to me and convenient. A previous garage which was just 2 guys i used to take my previous Ford cars to as i found the pressures would vary each week and i was going through tyres like 1 a year! So i started visiting them every week or 2 and having them check and adjust pressures, i'd usually tip them and when it came to needing a new tyre, they gave me a discount off the tyre so was always a nice bonus to not pay full price Unfortunately they closed and then never re-opened and when it finally did,it was a totally different name, people etc and i don't know what happened to them or where the guys went to. That's partly why i was soo impressed when moving to Fords that my tyres are lasting waaay longer but that could be because tyres are bigger, my Fords were mostly 16 or maybe 17" wheels max lol. Kev
Brakes hmmm E60 on over 270k miles. Pads and discs have been changed once ... yip once. I don’t take it easy on them when actually braking, and previous cars tended to need pads at circa 50k. I’m not complaining as from memory the dealership quoted £1800 a few years ago for the job lot
like not bad for a brand new 520D M sport on PCP with 8k miles per annum when they hit £299 per month l may have a look
Hi all, Took my car in today for its service and MOT, asked on the phone if service was covered by 5 year plan I had which runs out this year, was told yes, its covered. Got phone call on Friday evening to confirm car was booked in and would be arriving etc and unfortunately it seems they didn't have me down for waiting for the car which I'd asked for when i booked it before xmas so fortunately they had booked car in for it's MOT at around 9am so not too bad. Took car up this morning, got a call after 15-20mins of dropping it off as I decided to take a walk as was told would be 2 hours till its ready. Chap advised would be doing service and MOT and total cost would be £150, upon querying this, it appears the break fluid change isn't covered by the 5 year service plan as you only get 1 of these so went along with it as not too much choice. Back home now, car has passed MOT, no advisories so all good. Unfortunately I just saw the reception lady to pay so didn't get to see the service guy who phoned earlier which usually I always see but I guess they changing how they do things. I did, however, get an additional piece of paper which I've not seen before for Brake test results, anyone else had one of these? tbh I'm not entirely sure what it all means other than it has passed lol For example here is a quick extract of the sheet:- 1.Axle:- Parameter by side service brake Left Right Limit Drag [kgf] 16 16 Maximum Brake force [kgf] 279 331 Roller stop wheel lock wheel lock Variation [%] 8 5 Goes on for 2.Axle Then below this is another table 1.Axle:- Parameter by side service brake Parking brake Manual Assess Measured Limit Measured Limit Bind Fluct Inc/Dec Imbalance [%] 16 <=30 Pass Pass Pass Axle Weight [kg] 1112 Grab R: Grab L: Pass Pass Pass goes on for 2.Axle Then a final table Parameter by side Total Br. f. [kgf] Brake eff. [%] Limit [%] Locking Criteria Service Brake 1119 52 >=58 Pass with lock Parking Brake 487 22 >=16 Measured Weight [kg] 2120 Measured Mode ATL procedure Overall test result Pass (Pass with lock) Anyone else had a similar piece of paper? Also got another sheet showing 0.00 smoke so all good there. Video health check says I've got 6-7mm on tyres at front, 4-5mm on rears, brake pads all good, and discs are ok all round the car. Video was only 40 odd seconds long.. Will have to look now to see what the costs of next service are likely to be and if I should maybe sign up to a service plan to spread the cost. Kev
we had a discussion on here a while back about the second brake fluid change and was it covered by the five year service plan the plan T&Cs do say only one brake fluid change at three years old so the second brake fluid which is due at five years from date of manufacture so it is due before service plan expires l always said that it should be covered as it is a service item and is due whilst the five year plan is still active last year when my car was booked for the second brake fluid change the cost was covered by the service plan for me so the dealer obviously didn't know about the exclusion so did it on the plan l wonder if they got there money back off BMW or if the dealer stood the cost did they say anything about the front discs this year
Must be that time of the year, mine goes in for an MOT this week (not due till the 17th) i'm hoping it all passes with no problems, the majority of the previous advisories were all for tyre wear, and it's only done 47k so hoping it will be a clean pass
Hi @mach one , Thanks, I recall a discussion on here regarding it. No, nothing at all this time, health check basically said pads and discs were fine as well as tyre thread. I did notice form the video, the front tyre depth is the same as last year - 6-7mm, but the rear tyres are now 4-5mm so I'm guessing maybe next year? or if i'm lucky the year after I will need to replace the rear tyres. Car has covered just over 30,600 miles now, was just under when it went in which is just under 7k miles for last year. ideally hoping I can get another 2 years out of the tyres as maybe by then I'd have moved the car on. Kev
@Kev2005 Nice one on the 'Pass', shame about the £150 - sometimes you'd think they make it up as they go along.
here is the section from the 5 year service pack T&Cs and l have highlighted the relevant section l guess l was lucky to get the second brae fluid service covered for free
We had the X1 (3 years nect month , 37,000 miles) done last Monday/Tuesday. For the first time ever I did not have the page regarding emmissions, (referance above it did not have details of Brake test). I asked for the Brake Fluid to be changed , initaily it was charged until I point out it had the 4year/60,000 mile sevice pack. Then told Brake Fluid not included in service pack, eventually agreed it was and deducted it. Pity they did not rectify a boot that has a habit of jamming when opening or closing. First comments --- it OK sir , no trouble. Next comment --- we had no time to do it as we are busy. The work was booked over 4 weeks before and they had the car for 1.5 days. They could have had it longer , if we had been told prior to driving 30 miles to collect it. The reluctance of this dealer to carry out warrantee work is actualy making me consider if the extended warranty is worth taking out.
Thanks @slim_boy_fat yeah They have just called me too... they want to get me into a new car so are going to be providing me some quotes/offers, waiting for the email, mostly out of curiosity to see what they offer. Kev
