    Hi,

I need some advice on resolving a couple of issues i am having. I have a 09 plate 335D coupe:

    1. Car has gone into constant limp mode (3-4000 revs before changing gear)
    2. DPF light comes on sometimes and when it does and i come to a standstill the care judders and switches itself off sometimes.

Any help / advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Mileage? Car mapped?

Common issue on bmw's driven over short journeys or certainly was for the yr of your car unfortunately. Also glow plugs and thermostats play a major part in the regen process. I would get a diag done and check for codes and also access the hidden menu and check your running temp. Anything under 75C and the car will not regen. Fix these bits first then it may regen either way they need to be sorted if you fit a new or cleaned out dpf

Hmmm that doesn't sound to good M8 I would suspect that the previous owner may well of been aware of the fault:(. I always do a diag before I buy any second hand bmw even from a dealer (yes you do get some strange looks). I used a C110 obd scanner for mine they are on ebay and work very well.

Worth every penny can measure dpf back pressure as well in case its your sensor that's faulty along with codes. Half the price of any cheap diag.(y)

Hopefully the car needs a forced regen and then it will be ok. Diesels need regular driving over longer distances to keep the emissions systems working correctly.
An “Italian tune” once a month helps......

Won't work if the conditions for a regen are not met tho, IE temp/speed/glow plugs etc. You need to activate a forced regen then drive it to meet the criteria and continue until it complete the process fully. Can be seen on INPA but I used a C110 on a mobile phone windscreen mount so I could monitor what was going on with my e60 535d.

Sorry to say Italian tunes up do not work on diesels its a myth as you have no idea when the car is going to request a regen if you did then it would be a lot easier. The tell tale signs are holding gears longer, very hot smell when stopping and exhaust ting

Just had my mate look at it and had to force the regen. Been on a drive and looks like its all sorted. The power is back nd not holding gears as long. Will monitor it for the next few days / weeks.

Thanks for all the help / advice

I’ve run diesels for the past 7/8 years, mainly Alfa’s/Saab’s with the 1.9 Fiat units. I’ve had plenty of experience of DPF/swirl flap/clogged manifolds etc.
For those engines a healthy thrashing did help to maintain the system, increased heat, pressure and fuel flow. The specialist I used agreed wholeheartedly that this helps, especially for the egr valve.
Agree that the regen process needs to be monitored, either via an adaptor or via physical observations (on the Alfa/Saab I used to get a “live” mpg and could see this drop when regen occurs). There isn’t always heat/smell.
The current 320d hasn’t really shown me any signs of regen, 18K miles over 14 months. Mainly used for motorway driving with some town/country roads. I do 3 tanks on an economy basis, keeping a decent mpg, and then the fourth is given a good blast. No issues so far......

I've never really noticed my 330d F30 doing a REGEN. No change to the engine noise, no smells of hot exhausts etc. The only real indication is increased fuel consumption for that journey. So from my point of view, it's completely unobtrusive. :)

That's because the F30 was a total new design the earlier BMW's (E60 etc) made you aware mine always smelt hot and the exhaust would be tinging after a regen along with holding the gears for longer on changes and a reduction in mpg

If you monitor the back pressure at idle it will give you a good idea of how full of ash the dpf actually is. The lower figure the better unfortunately I can't remember the figures but I'm sure a google will find them. Once again the C110 does this along with many other things it really is worth purchasing for the older bmw's

You’ve got me thinking that the C110 hand held seems to be a wise purchase. Given that the E92 is now 8 years old and rapidly approaching 80K miles it is getting to that point where some preventative maintenance is essential.
